VERDICT

If you're a fan of Angel like me, you'll probably get more of a kick out of Puppet War:FPS than the average player, but its well presented - albeit mindless - gameplay might still be appealing to a casual crowd.

Allow me a moment to be a bit geeky - yes, even geekier than talking about video games on the Internet. Episode 14 of season 5 for the TV show 'Angel', otherwise known as 'Smile Time' is perhaps one of my favorite episodes of all time and deals with evil puppets and their dastardly plans. So when Puppet War:FPS by Twindigo was released, I was locked and loaded for some fluffy revenge.

The controls are fairly standard for a first-person shooter, with an analogue stick for movement and a basic firing button on the other side. Swiping the screen allows you to control the camera, but when using ranged weapons you can move your thumb after holding down on the firing button to keep aiming. When facing a veritable horde of puppets it's nice to know that the controls are uncomplicated and it certainly makes your job of cleaning them up much easier.

The puppets themselves are almost creepy in their realistic design, however there's not a lot of variety with new puppet essentially being a re-sized re-skin of the first one you encounter. The animations do differ however and helps to keep things entertaining, at least for a while. Soon the repetitive slaughter of an increasing number of puppets becomes fairly mundane and your only true reward is unlocking new weapons to experiment with.

More challenges, areas or even multiplay would have helped to curb the uneasy sense that you're headed nowhere fast, but the mindless challenge may just be what some action fans are after.
