Upon first play, Box Cat seems a little bit of a revenge tale. Cats have been the bane of the night-time motorist for a long while, and sadly many are accidentally hit. Box Cat is here to turn the tables by smashing into as many cars as possible, causing chain reactions resulting in pileups, and making trucks explode.
Each level starts on a city street. As Box Cat (or any of his unlockable cat cousins) you move back and forth, slamming into cars and sending them spinning out of control. There is also a dash button where you can charge up an attack and zoom across the street (this dash attack is needed to destroy the trucks at the end of each area). If a car hits another car while crashing, a multiplier starts, and the way to big score bonuses is to try and create as many of these chain reactions as possible. During the game, birds will fly by with time extensions and coins. If three coins are collected, Box Cat turns into Super Box Cat, who then proceeds to go all Godzilla on the already hapless motorists.
As there's not much to do besides vehicular mayhem, there are lists of objectives to accomplish to level up, which will unlock the other cats. There's also a survival and rush hour mode which adds a little bit of variety.
Box Cat uses a very simplistic retro art style along with an original chiptune score. The visuals are a little too simplistic however and the music gets on your nerves rather quickly. Box Cat is pretty much bite-sized fun based around a funny idea. Some may appreciate what it has to offer.

WORD ON THE STREET?
"Box Cat comes highly recommended, as a quick arcade fix with lasting power." —Touch Gen
"It has a Rush Hour mode, which is super fun. It puts you on a double size street and there's cars coming down every lane. Basically you wreak havoc running into all these cars and you can build up super huge combos." —Touch Arcade
"Box Cat feels like a catharsis or apology for all those animals that were shamelessly harmed in games such as Frogger. Instead of creatures being run over by cars, cars are being run over by Box Cat." —IndieGames.com
"The system works because as you play you get better, and the difficulty of the objectives increases to match your new-found car-destroying skills." —Pocket Gamer
"Imagine an 8-bit Burnout's Crash Junctions except you're driving a cat" —Shaun Inman, Creator of The Last Rocket
