Space Tripper Review
- Very interesting level design and use of perspective.
- I haven't seen a game with cheat options in a long time.
- Boring gameplay.
A run of the mill shoot em up with an interesting control scheme and trippy level design. Sadly this does do enough to outweigh the game's problems.

The shoot em up is a pretty standard genre in video gaming nowadays. Indeed it takes something special to get noticed. Is Space Tripper worth noticing? Let us find out.
Your ship is controlled by tilting. Weapon fire is automatic, and tapping the screen on the left and the right side will accomplish different things. The left side will change your weapon from a single fire option to a triple spray. The spray covers more area but is weaker. Both can be upgraded by picking up power upgrades dropped by enemies so it's up to you to decide which fire is more beneficial to you. Tapping the right side of the screen will reverse direction and as the levels are usually quite small, you will need to zip back and forth to clear the area of enemies.
Let's talk about the levels. Not only claustrophobic, but the level design makes very interesting use of perspective. In the second level for example, the entire middle length section is on a skewed plain, while the first boss fight takes place on an arc stretching out towards the player with the sides of the level being quite a ways lower. This alongside the plentiful particle effects makes for a unique and visually pleasing game experience.
It's just the game itself that is lacking. Levels drag on far too long, with zipping back and forth eliminating enemies becoming a chore. It is also far too easy to slam into a projectile or an enemy itself and bite the dust, which just adds to the frustration. The game was immensely more fun during the review play experience when the cheat codes were turned on, but that being the case, you can see the problem. Space Tripper is for fans of the shoot em up genre and those who like the look of the unique level design and pleasant visuals.
