Ichi

4 out of 5

PROS

  • Single-touch controls don't detract from the skill required to succeed.
  • Clever use of basic puzzle elements to create complex levels.
  • Level creator and community features to promote original, fun content.

CONS

  • Easy to forget about the 'draw' feature; runs against expectations that all that you require should already be on the screen.

VERDICT

Clever, clean and devious in its design, ichi by Stolen Couch Games pulls no punches when it comes to its puzzling gameplay.

Often a physics puzzler can be too fiddly with its positioning and line drawing isn't always precise depending on how large your fingers are, but tapping, now there's a control that works without fail. 'ichi' by Stolen Couch Games follows the golden rule of puzzlers - keep it simple, make it challenging.

With only a single tap you can change the layout of each of the puzzle-room's elements, either rotating blocks; phasing them in and out of existence; or even creating temporary barriers. As soon as you start a room, a ball is placed in to motion and it won't stop until every ring is collected from the stage. By shifting elements you can modify its path, though 'A' ranks can only be earned with the absolute minimum of interaction.

It seems the 'doodle' style is back in fashion once again, and 'ichi' does a a great job of pulling it off, with each element on the screen leaving a sort of 'smudge' when they move or are otherwise erased. The bold and simple color-coded elements make it much easier to track what's happening on screen, which is especially helpful when multiple balls make their debut.

Of course there's always a disappointing limit to the amount of levels on offer, no matter how many are provided (in this case, just over 50 at the time of this review), however a level creation system means you can not only create levels for your own enjoyment, but they can be shared for the community to enjoy too. Once played, the level can be rated and tagged by the community, making it easier to find quality levels to keep you entertained.

ichi is the perfect puzzling distraction for those tired of fiddly controls and craving something that requires a bit more skill on the part of the player.
