iDamaged Review

There are titles that are near and dear to my heart thanks to the role they played while growing up in shaping my love of playing video games. Psygnosis' release of the unique and very brutal shooter 'Walker' is amongst these, thanks in part to its clever control scheme, detailed pixel-art and sharp audio design. iDamaged takes a stab at recreating this classic for the modern iOS gamer, but aside from the visual overhaul it's a long way off the mark. One change fans of Walker may be a…

Tiny Tower Attracts 1 Million Daily Active Users On iOS

Tiny Tower now attracts over 1 million daily active users each day, who tot up more than 10 million play sessions each day, according to the game's developers NimbleBit. This freemium title, which tasks players with micromanaging an ever-expanding tower of residents and businesses, has proven a hit with reviewers and customers alike. We here at AppSpy awarded the title a noteworthy 4/5, while Apple even named it their iPhone game of 2011 in the US. These activity figures, which came from a tweet by NimbleBit co-founder Ian Marsh, show that the 1 million daily active users of Tiny Tower load the game up on average ten times per day. Impressive stuff. If you're looking for a brand-new com…

Seal Force Review

So who else always thinks of Steven Seagal with a black nose and flippers every time they hear the term Navy Seal? No one? Ah well. Seal Force is a highly trained amphibious unit tasked with stopping the evil mastermind Krillian from polluting the oceans. What's more, they launch their missions out of the mouth of a sperm whale. How's that for advanced? As the game begins, you think you're going to get an animated TV show version of Jetpack Joyride, and you'd be right in spirit. This…

Developers Of Acclaimed Cave Story Make App Store Debut With Azarashi

Studio Pixel, the developers behind the acclaimed freeware PC adventure game Cave Story, have made their App Store debut with the release of Azarashi. This curious title challenges your reflexes as you work to prevent seal keychains from dropping off the screen. But, if you try to stop them too soon, "bad things will happen!" Perhaps 'curious' isn't a strong enough word, actually... Azarashi may be a rather simplistic title when compared to Cave Story's sprawling 2D adventure, but it looks set to deliver accessible and high score-chasing gameplay, which is apparently "fun and safe for the whole family". Always good to know. Azarashi is available to download now from the App Store, and…

Lunar Racer Review

When Noodlecake Studios first told us that their next project was like a mash-up between Tiny Wings and Mario Kart, I have to say I was equally worried and excited about it. Excited because it's a genius little concept and worried because there's a fine line that must be tread by all 'Kart' games to remain fun no matter where you end up at the finish line. While Lunar Racer manages to pull off the basic concept with ease, a combination of control and content woes brings the game short…

Super Crate Box Review

Too often gamers bring down the mighty wrath of the collective community down upon a game for being a 'clone'. While sometimes justified (especially if artistic theft is involved), more often than not gamers are simply witnessing the natural progression of any new idea to mass production and eventual refinement in to a genre. Super Crate Box by Vlambeer and Halfbot is arguably the progenitor of its particular flavor and style of arcade action-platforming, but with competitors already m…

Update Promised To Super Crate Box Once Community Collects 5 Million Crates

Vlambeer's PC freeware hit Super Crate Box has finally been released for the iPhone, bringing its acclaimed mixture of frantic platforming and crate collection to mobiles for the first time. The game has you frantically jumping around a 2D single-screen arena, eliminating enemies as you go, in an effort to grab as many crates as possible. For each crate you collect, you earn a point and your weapon is randomly swapped for another from the game's over-the-top arsenal. Vlambeer, the indie developers behind the game, have said that as soon as the Super Crate Box userbase has collected a total of five million crates, it'll "get an update of the game ready to roll out". At the time of writing…

Terra Noctis Review

In the world of nightmares, where the most vile and horrific apparitions that our imaginations can concoct reside, you play the role of... Allen. Hey, not every nightmare can be terrifying, and that's exactly what Allen's problem is. His teacher is fed up with him for not being at all scary, and so while looking through the library, Allen finds a book that says anyone who eats the heart of this creature deep in the forest will become utterly terrifying. We've got ourselves a quest here…

Bloons 2 Review

Everyone remember Bloons? No, not the popular tower defense game, the other one. You know, the monkey who uses darts to pop a series of balloons for no discernible reason? Well, it's been over two years and that game has finally gotten a sequel. For those of you who have been waiting for more primate popping pandemonium, let us tell you what the sequel has in store. Players of the original should feel quite at home, and new players should realize that the first title had such shortcom…

Top 10 iPhone Games Of 2011

For those that know me personally, 'top lists' are a topic I find to be profoundly difficult to participate in as there's always a point at which you're splitting hairs just for the sake of ranking one thing above or below another. Keeping this in mind, AppSpy.com's Top 10 iOS Games for 2011 has not been numbered for the simple reason that a game's position ultimately means so very little when you consider how many games it had to overcome to reach that spot. Hold on to your pitchforks though as Dave, Richard and I have selected our personal favorites of the year, so at least three games will be going home with the knowledge that they managed to crack the cold-hard shell of these r…

Top 3 iOS Games for December 2011

Before we get to the big lists of the year we need to follow protocol and make sure we acknowledge the best games of December 2011. With this in mind, December had some surprisingly hefty releases, though not all of them turned out to be as exciting as we had hoped. None the less as always there's some spark of hope given the amount of releases each month, so lets get stuck in. 3. Sonic CD - SEGA $2.99 For many, including myself, the opportunity to play Sonic CD on its original console was a rare one (or at least rarer than most) and while future consoles had versions of the game, it was never quite the same. Thankfully clever-cookie Christian Whitehead spent the time rebuilding…

Icebreaker Hockey Is Free To Download For A Limited Time

NaturalMotion Games's arcade ice hockey title Icebreaker Hockey is currently free to download for a limited time. The recipient of a mighty fine 4/5 from this very site, Icebreaker Hockey has you deking and spinning your way past fierce opposition players, before lining up a power shot to beat the goaltender. On the other hand, you may mess up somewhere along the way and get brutally barged into a Plexiglass wall for your troubles. It's a game of heroic victories and hilariously exaggerated defeats, then, as you work your way through the increasingly stiff opposition provided in Challenge mode. There's no word on how long this promotion is set to last, so hockey fans will want to get the…
