Hard Lines Review

As the wheel of time turns, we finally find ourselves face to face again with an old nemesis - Snake. What was once a staple addition to just about every mobile device has been reborn in Spilt Milk Studios' latest release, Hard Lines. "Been there, done that" you say? Sure, we've probably all spent our penance of chasing pixels in order to make a snake grow larger, but Hard Lines proposes a slightly different kind of game. Taking a page from TRON, this version of Snake is slightly more…

Chillingo's Swords & Soldiers Ready To Rock iOS Soon

Swords & Soldiers, one of the most critically acclaimed WiiWare games ever, is coming to iPhone in the next few weeks. The game's original makers Ronimo Games are on development duties again, while Chillingo deal with all the marketing and hype nonsense. In Swords & Soldiers, you side-scroll your way through the 2D, real-time world as one of three nations (the Vikings, Aztecs, or Chinese) looking to achieve bizarre objectives. The Vikings, for example, are on a mission to create the ultimate BBQ sauce. Wacky, huh? If that doen't whet your appetite, then there'll also be a customisable skirmish mode for further thrills and spills. Look out for Swords & Soldiers on iPhone over…

Monster Soup Review

I'm not going to lie - with all the cute, fluffy titles currently available I thought I'd become some sort of jaded husk of a human being. Then Monster Soup by Keiffer Bros came along and much like the Grinch my heart grew three sizes that day. Developers have tried many ways to change-up, complicate or even obfuscate the basic three-match gameplay, but in Monster Soup you only need to draw a connection between similarly colored creatures to 'save' them. The catch is that any monster…

Drop The Chicken Review

Although a balanced diet for a chicken can be quite varied, it's hard for me to imagine the dirt-scratching birds chomping down on a meal of flies. In reality it's not that strange at all, but the problem most chickens face is catching them in the first place. Drop The Chicken by Sharp Creative Agency proposes a somewhat novel, Rube Goldberg inspired solution to help some chickens in supplementing their diet. The basic setup will be familiar to anyone who has been paying attention to…

Angry Birds Seasons Dining Out On Summer Pignic sSon

Only days after it launched a new Mine & Dine update for the original Angry Birds game, developer Rovio has announced via its Facebook page that Angry Birds Seasons for iPhone will also be getting an update. The Finnish developer has kept mum with regards to detailed information on the Summer Pignic update, with only a couple of images shown on the very same Facebook page. When pushed lightly by users on Twitter, though, Rovio intimated that we'd see the next episode in the Angry Birds Seasons saga on 4th July. Looks like an Independence Day special for everyone's favourite frustrated fowl! Check out the Summer Pignic promo shots below...…

Juicy New Pomegranate In Fruit Ninja For iPhone

Quench yourself with the juicy news that Halfbrick's super popular 5-star melon-chopping iPhone game Fruit Ninja has been updated overnight. A new fruit, the pomegranate, has been introduced and is “a multi-slice bullet time fruit”, which allows you to rack up a massive points total at the end of every Arcade game and sporadically throughout Classic games. New music has also been incorporated into the game, along with the ability to view your friends' high scores. Since its release, Fruit Ninja has been downloaded more than 25 million times. And critically speaking, it's performed just as admirably: in fact, we loved it enough to rate it #9 in our Top 10 iOS games of 2010. Yo…

Skipping Stone Review

Despite already having a few titles dedicated to the 'Skipping Stone' series, it seems that iOS gamers are only now being introduced to this classic game from GAMEVIL's archives. Given its Java past it's no surprise to see this endless arcade title keeping things simple, but trying to keep an anthropomorphic stone in the air isn't an easy task. Originally, players had to traverse around the world, encountering various creatures in an attempt to find the stone's lost love. While the st…

Cell Bound™ Review

In Puzzle Bobble, it's up to you to carefully aim a colored orb and fire it in to position next to two or more similarly colored orbs to eliminate them from the screen. Simple right? Now imagine the orbs are being fired randomly from all around you and the only way to match them is to spin the cluster of orbs in the middle; that's Hothead Game's latest title Cell Bound in a nutshell. Or is that petri dish? In either case you'll have to master the deceptively simple task of swiping to…

10 Warriors Added To Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Roster

10 Warriors Added To Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Roster

One of the most - if not THE most - recognisable elements of Midway's brutal Mortal Kombat series was Shao Khan's imploration, "Finish Him!" What normally then followed was a gruesomely entertaining 'fatality', which totally showed your executed opponent who the flamin' boss was. From Heaven, presumably. The makers of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, however, EA, can't seem to 'finish' off their own iPhone iteration, for they've dished out an update to their six-month-old title. In EA's (self-)defence, version 1.2.57 of their 3/5-star fighting game does deliver what the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 App Store community has been waiting for since December... ...namely 10 extra playable characters (i…

Gameloft Unveil Screenshots For Stealthy Silent Ops

An iOS operative whose mission is to relay to AppSpy readers counter-espionage info from Gameloft's top-secret bunker, my name is Agent Brown. Richard Brown. The objective today is to reveal some unlicensed screenshots of, and illicit gameplay tidbits about, the French developer's Silent Ops sneak-a-thon. Often accused of 'jacking' ideas, artwork, and settings from existing famous IP, Gameloft have, on this occasion, looked to one of their own for inspiration...the brilliant Splinter Cell: Conviction. With three intelligence agents from the under-under-underground organisation Ubiquity at your disposal, you must save the planet from a bunch of evildoers intent on mass cloning. Odd…

Ghost Harvest Is New Freemium Title From 8lb Gorilla

Burke and Hare would turn in their graves if they realised that, in time, fiddling around with dead bodies for fun could all be done via a freemium iPhone app. Two years after their debut outing Zombies & Me, 8lb Gorilla (EA's micro-studio) returns with a new venture, pitched somewhere between FarmVille and The Addams Family. I mean, why harvest life-giving crops when you could be saving the souls of bucket-kicking space miners, pilots, and other unfortunates? As the cemetery boss, it’s your job to take care of the graves and spruce up the grim locale with trees, mansions, scarecrows and other boo-tiful artefacts. Much like freemium title Smurfs' Village with its Smurfberries,…

Flick Golf Extreme! Review

It's odd what you might consider 'missing' from a game until you're handed it on a plate. While Flick Golf by Full Fat is still a fun distraction, it's not terribly exciting. I hear you asking, 'But it's golf - what else did you expect?' - well, it seems that the latest incarnation of the series has answered this question. How about teeing off from a helicopter on to an aircraft carrier? How does that float your boat? If you're not already familiar with 'flick' titles in general, the…

ZOOKEEPER DX Review

Lets use the 'way back when' machine to jump to the far-off land of 2005. To set the scene: You have your chunky Nintendo DS and while Super Mario 64 is fun, you need something else besides your aging Gameboy Advance games to justify playing on it. Insert Zoo Keeper and the introduction of three-match gameplay on a touch device - it's like Bejeweled but with a slightly new dimension to it and that's enough to keep you hooked, at least for a while. Fast-forward to 2011 and now you have…

Fishlabs Warm Hearts With Ice-Cold Snowboard Hero Update

Fishlabs Warm Hearts With Ice-Cold Snowboard Hero Update

Snowboard Hero: probably the - cough - coolest type of hero you can be. German developers Fishlabs would be inclined to agree, since they dedicated an entire iPhone sim to this particular extreme sport. Rather kindly, Fishlabs have taken the time to update Snowboard Hero, debuting two more playable characters - Kurt and Monica - and two new tracks (one of which is pleasantly named Death Ridge). Uberboards have also been introduced, resulting in your character becoming statistically awesome as soon as he sets foot on them. The extra tracks, events, and achievements are all gravy in our view, considering that the limited number of courses was one of the few qualms we had with Snowboard Her…
