App Wrap Up (Week Ending 26th April, 2013)

Hey hey readers, and welcome to another installment of your favourite feature on the site, the App Wrap Up! It's been a week of transition as we say goodbye to Andrew and welcome on James to fill his place. The video content has been missed, but you will always have good ol' Dave here with his written content (which for the most part, was the backbone of our video content anyway)! Oh, and it's also my birthday, so yes, I am indeed taking time out of this day of celebration to let you know about some games that may have fallen under the radar based on their trailers. We don't have too many this week, so let's get started!   Fill Spector (WOW Inc.) So aside from the game being enjoye…

Dark Avenger gets a dark trailer

Dark Avenger gets a dark trailer

Do you want to be a dark avenger? Do you even know what a dark avenger is? Well, by the looks of the first trailer for Gamevil and Boolean Games's upcoming iOS game, it involves a massive amount of murder, flashing numbers, and picking stuff up. The game appears to be a pretty standard dungeon crawling hack and slasher with expansive character customisation options, lots of loot to find, and screen-fulls of enemies to reduce to quivering wrecks with your sword swinging antics. We don't have any word yet on when the game's coming out, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it landing on the App Store in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, check out the trailer we've embedded for your pe…

Iron Man 3 - The Official Game Review

Iron Man 3 - The Official Game Review

The Iron Man franchise is one of cinema's heavy hitters, and thus you can always expect a tie-in videogame to accompany it. The previous movies have all had game tie-ins, and like with most Gameloft releases, they have been of a certain level of quality. Not fantastic, but definitely playable and enjoyable in their own way. Now the last game was a 3D action brawler but since then the endless runner has become the go-to genre on the App Store, so no points if you guessed this is what Ir…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run Review

Like many children of the eighties, I have a certain favourable nostalgic lens when it comes to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As an iPhone games reviewer, I have a certain malaise when it comes to the endless runner genre. Last month's review of Snoopy Coaster showed that an average game can be excused if one enjoys the license, but only slightly. TMNT: Rooftop Run poses the same question, but at least a sigh of relief can be breathed as this is an endless runner that is at least a…

Rift Hunter

News By Dave Flodine, 11 months, 4 weeks ago
Rift Hunter

Rift Hunter boasts the combination of classic beat 'em ups like Golden Axe and Final Fight with MMO style community mechanics. If you watch the trailer, you'll also see that it has solid visual presence, a rocking soundtracks, and lots of numbers as you attack your foes (if that kind of this excites you). With multiple classes (each with their own skill tree), and plenty of level content, this could be a fun brawler as long as the controls hold up. Have a look at the trailer. The game is due out some time in May and will be released with a free price tag.…

Puzzle games go off without a Hitch

Puzzle games go off without a Hitch

Ok, so that one was stretching a little. Hitch is a really interesting puzzle game that kind of plays like a large scale rubix cube creating pathways. Have a look at the trailer to see what i mean. As of now, the game is only available on Android, but the developer has assured me he's working on an iOS version that should be released in May, so keep on the lookout!…

Combo Crew Trailer

A while back we gave you a first look at The Game Bakers' latest project, Combo Crew. Well some more time has passed, and now we have a trailer to show off to you. A release date for sometime in May has been announced. If anything, it will be interesting to see how a beat 'em up like this works with touch controls.…

Thieving Daddies?

Yes! Daddy was a Thief is the latest game by Rebel Twins, makers of Crumble Zone. With a fun setup and keeping the same crunchy sound effects their previous title was known for, this looks like a fun spin on the time waster / endless runner genre. Have a look at the trailer! The game is due out on the 9th of May.…

Appspy Transition Updated!

Appspy Transition Updated!

Hey hey all! Well a work week has passed since I wrote about Appspy getting all shook up like Elvis. For those of you who were missing the video content, first... shame on you for not making do with my amazing reviews! Now that I've got all the jokes out of my system, let me fill you in on what's going on. Andrew has taken a new position at a new company. We wish him the best, and will miss the work he put into helping make Appspy much bigger than it was when I was editor. In the past week, our parent company Steel Media has found us a new video creator in James, who will be commencing new video content as of next week. I'd like you all to make him feel welcome. So that's pretty much it. I…

Lego Batman: DC Superheroes swings onto the App Store

If you like superheroes, building things, smashing things, and large winged rodents, then you're in for a treat today, because Lego Batman: DC Superheroes has made its way onto the App Store, bringing with it all of those things and more. There are two control methods that let you throw Batman and company around the game, with a newly designed scheme for touch screen devices and the more traditional floating joystick both vying to be the one you poke the most. With more than 80 characters to unlock, special abilities to master, and a huge story driven single player campaign to explore, there's enough content here to keep you playing for a good long while. The game is available from the Ap…

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 Review

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 Review

It's been a couple years since Adult Swim graced us with Robot Unicorn Attack, a fantastical romp with a unicorn through a fairy tale world, complete with the biggest earworm of a soundtrack to ever grace iOS gaming. Seriously, “Always, I want to be with you”... it's in your head now, isn't it? So what do the creators have in store for a sequel. Well the usual mantra for sequels is more of the same, but bigger and better, and while that is certainly the case here, they've l…

Monster Meltdown Review

For some reason, Yuri is a janitor in a lab that either houses monsters, creates monsters, or creates, and then houses monsters. Through a mishap, the monsters are let out. Now obviously Yuri is in trouble. Not only for his life (as he now has monsters running around), but his bosses are not going to be happy when they find out what he's done. So Yuri does what any of us would do; he puts on his teleporting hazard suit and goes to round up all the rampant monstrosities. Monster Meltdo…

Fancy slaughtering some zombie mutants?

Fancy slaughtering some zombie mutants?

House of the Dead: Overkill took the lightgun franchise into some brilliant new territory, infusing it with a 70's exploitation vibe and a lot more blood and gore. It's big, silly, and now there's a new version on iOS. Called The Lost Reels, the game features the original cast of the Wii hit, and throws them into three stages of gory b-movie style violence. Shoot mutants, collect cash, and upgrade your weapons to become the best zombie slaughterer on the planet. If you like your shooters grim and blood splattered, but not afraid to have a cheeky wink to the camera, then House of the Dead: Overkill The Lost Reels is likely to be right up your alley. Throw in a survival mode and three differ…

Solitaire Blitz Review

It's been a while since we've seen something from Popcap Games. Once having a reputation for casual yet fiercely addictive titles, many of which received praise from the mainstream gaming media, the company's output has been kind of sparse and quiet these last few years. Well it seems they're still with us having released Solitaire Blitz, a spin on the Windows gaming classic that emphasises social play and leaderboards. Yes, solitaire as a social game. The irony wasn't lost on us eithe…

Garden of Fear Review

Garden of Fear Review

Garden of Fear has a warning on its iTunes page. It cautions people who are scared easily from playing this game. Full disclosure, Dave cannot handle scary games. He's fine with horror films, but there's something about controlling the character involved in a horror scenario instead of just watching it that makes things all too real. For this reason, he tends to stay away from horror titles, and either as a cruel joke or just by providence, is given this game to review. You wake up in…
