LEGO The Lord of the Rings out on iOS 'soon'

It's only been a couple of weeks since we learned that the LEGO Star Wars games are coming to iOS in 2014. However, it looks like Frodo, Gandalf, and the rest of the Fellowship are going to beat Skywalker and friends to the punch. According to a press release which appeared on Touch Arcade, LEGO The Lord of the Rings has its scary, flaming eye fixed on the App Store, and is expected to appear 'soon'. Given the high quality of the iOS ports of LEGO Batman: DC Super Heroes and the LEGO Harry Potter series, we've got high hopes for the smartphone-friendly version of this plastic-themed trip into Middle Earth. As soon as we have a concrete release date, we'll sound the Horn of Gondor. Until…

Vlad Review

With a name like Vlad, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Bulkypix's latest interactive effort is about the nocturnal adventures of a vampire. Though the game is dark and eerie, it has nothing to do with the children of Dracula, and everything to do with rearranging blocks. It's up to the player to move sentient blocks around each stage in order to help a squiggly-blobby thing called Vlad reach an object at the end of the level. Vlad moves forward automatically, stopping if he encoun…

See the first trailer for Battleheart's 'spiritual successor', Battleheart Legacy

We took a shine to Mika Mobile's adorable action-RPG Battleheart when it marched onto iOS a couple of years back. Its blend of real-time combat and polished 2D visuals coupled with an impressive skill system helped it win the heart of our reviewer, and the approval of a decent number of mobile RPG fans. It shouldn't surprise you to learn that the dev team responsible hasn't been sitting on its collective hands for the past 24 months. Allow us to introduce you to Battleheart Legacy, the "spiritual successor to Battleheart: The trailer above is our first glimpse of Battleheart Legacy in action. As you can see, the series has had a major graphical overhaul, and is now sporting new (but equa…

Tetris creator to release new game Dwice this Thursday

Tetris creator to release new game Dwice this Thursday

When the guy who created Tetris releases a new game, we can't help but take notice. And when tetromino godfather Alexey Pajitnov releases his latest iOS effort Dwice later this week, you'll might want to take notice too. Dwice is a shape-matching puzzler which marries the decending object mechanic seen in Tetris with the colour-matching mechanic seen in every other iOS game released in the past 3 years. The aim is to clear the screen by dragging triangles, circles, and squares through the geometric equivilants, thereby clearing the screen. To score big, you have to chaintogether as many objects as possible in a single swipe. It sounds pretty simple, but you soon learn that if you accident…

BIT.TRIP RUN! Review

Earlier this year, Gaijin Games released Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien on PC and consoles. Now, the team has ported the game to iOS, and slimmed-down the title to the slightly more manageable Bit.Trip Run! Fans of the game might be worried that this mobile version has lost more than just its unweildy title. However, we can report that the entire game has been adapted faithfully to the touch screen, albeit with a few tweaks here and there. That said, it's no…

Thor: The Dark World - The Official Game Review

Thor: The Dark World - The Official Game Review

Thor is one of the more straightforward superheroes in Marvel's expansive catalogue. Son of Odin, the allfather and ruler of of Asgard, Thor has no alter-ego or mysterious origin story. He's a god, who comes from a realm of gods, and who likes to hit things with a big hammer. However, Gameloft's free-to-play brawler Thor: The Dark World - The Official Game is anything but straightforward. In this messy top-down smash-'em-up, our hero's combat prowess is sidelined in favour of man…

Ratchet & Clank headed to mobile

The latest installment in the Ratchet & Clank series Into the Nexus is set to launch on Playstation 3 this November 12th. Alongside that, however, Ratchet & Clank-themed endless-runner Before the Nexus will be coming to mobile. The game will link up with its PS3 counterpart, and Raritanium you earn in the mobile game will allow you to unlock more weapons in the console game. We're seeing a huge ramp-up in companion apps which tie directly into major console releases. Games like Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 all have mobile apps which let directly influence the full game from your iOS handset. I suspect we're only going to see more of this as we move forward…

The Occupant Review

The Occupant Review

The Occupant is the latest in a line of Slenderman-inspired survival-horror games. For some inexplicable reason, you find yourself trapped in an abandoned hotel with a creature known as the Occupant. Each stage has you fulfilling a series of tasks before you can move onto the next floor. As you complete these task, the creature is silently stalking the hallways in search of you. Let's make one thing perfectly clear; it's not the jump scares that make The Occupant creepy - rather, it's…

Anomaly 2 Review

When Anomaly Warzone Earth rolled onto the App Store two years ago, it made a big impact. Not only did it popularise the now well-established tower offense genre, it proved you could port high-quality PC releases to the App Store without compromising too much functionality. Anomaly 2, the first true sequel after the Anomaly Korea expansion, brings back the futuristic sci-fi warfare that made the original game so popular, and adds just enough bells and whistles to warrant you giving th…

Khaba is the most fun you can have trapped in a pyramid

Well we're not certain if that's the case. Frankly I don't want to find out for myself. Pyramids are dark and scary places.Khaba is made by veteran designers with credits such as Just Cause 2, and Bionic Commando: Rearmed. You control Michael, an intrepid explorer that finds himself trapped in a pyramid. The only way out seems to be down, by solving puzzles based about reflecting and refracting light. As you descend, you learn more about this protagonist and what his quest truly entails. Have a look at the gameplay trailer to see some of the puzzle solving in action. It's not a particularly original puzzle concept, but the scenario is intriguing, and if the story holds up,…
