Logitech G study shows rising support for eSports career paths
A new study commissioned by Logitech G suggests attitudes toward esports and professional gaming careers are continuing to shift worldwide, especially among younger players who’ve grown up with competitive online and mobile games as part of everyday life.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents said there should be more formal education pathways for people looking to break into esports and professional gaming, while over half now see professional gaming as a legitimate career choice.
Younger generation support
Support was strongest among younger generations, with 67% of Gen Z and 60% of Millennials backing more structured esports education routes. Regional differences were also noticeable, particularly between Western and Asian markets where competitive gaming has become far more mainstream.Derek Perez, Global Communications Gaming lead at Logitech G, comments: “This research shows how far esports and gaming have come – not only as entertainment, but as a genuine path to personal and professional success. However, more can be done to support younger generations in pursuing careers in professional gaming.
“The more companies like Logitech support athletes and the industry overall, the more opportunities there will be for people around the world to pursue roles in esports.”
Career uncertainty
Even with esports becoming more widely accepted, the survey found there are still plenty of hurdles facing aspiring pros. Financial uncertainty, fierce competition, and a lack of parental support were all seen as major barriers to building a career in gaming. One in five respondents also said the lack of formal qualifications or recognised education pathways is one of the biggest reasons people still don’t view professional gaming as a “real” career.
At the same time, people are increasingly recognising just how demanding competitive gaming can be. Globally, 84% of respondents described professional gaming as mentally demanding, while more than half also viewed it as physically demanding.
The results reflect how much the esports scene has evolved across PC, console, and mobile gaming, where competitive play, streaming, and creator culture have turned gaming from a hobby into a serious career ambition for many younger players.
Education was another major talking point. Nearly half of respondents said schools should offer esports classes alongside traditional sports, while 65% supported formal university, college, or specialist training pathways into the industry.
Gaining recognition
Respondents also said more mainstream media coverage, better access to training facilities, and greater transparency around earnings would help esports careers gain wider recognition. As esports continues to grow, access to reliable, pro-level gear is also becoming a bigger part of helping players sharpen their skills and compete at a higher level.
Derek Perez concludes: “Ensuring access to training, facilities, and technology is essential in ensuring the continued growth of careers in professional gaming.
