We are rapidly closing in on the release of the Mega Evolution set in Pokémon TCG Pocket, and have still only seen three of the cards. Not even a whiff of Mega Lucario, and I will riot if he is not introduced with the most almighty Aura Sphere known to man.

However, looking at those three, will any disrupt the meta?

If you have played online, you would have no doubt been wiped in seconds in an avalanche of Suicunes, Darkrais, and Greninjas. It is the latter of those that I feel might cause Mega Gyarados its biggest challenge. You will need your weekly Magikarp to survive at least one round before you pull out the Mega Gyarados. Having said that, there is a fair amount of Gyarados ex decks, so it is certainly doable.

Manage to evolve it, though, and you have the next issue: the attack is four energy. 210 HP doesn’t seem like a lot when your opponent is throwing everything at this card, especially when losing one Mega means 3 points to your opponent and an instant loss. I do feel like with the mainstay Misty ramp, and the Mythical Island Vaporeon’s Wash Out Ability, it is more than feasible.

After that, it is 140 damage and ravaging your foe's deck, so I can see Mega Gyrados being the best pick for a new meta.

I am not convinced that Mega Blaziken brings enough threat to outweigh the 3-point faint. If we compare it to even the basic Moltres ex and Charizard ex deck from Genetic Apex, you aren’t adding that much. Both attackers are stage three, so by the time you get there, you would have already used Moltres to stack enough energy on Charizard ex to mitigate losing two energy on Crimson Storm vs the one on Mega Blaziken's’ Mega Burning, which has 80 less damage.

Yes, you inflict burn, but Crimson Storm doesn’t leave much behind to be burnt. I am not seeing much here.

Finally, Mega Altaria. Two energy for 40 damage, plus 30 for each of your benched Pokemon, potentially 140 for a one-stage evolution. Respectable damage, but not what you would expect from a Mega. The 190 HP also does not make up for it. It is an Eevee Grove normal Sylveon with 100 more health, but it commits the sin of not being an Eeveelution.

I don’t want my Megas to just be a slightly tougher variant of an existing card. The inconsistent power and just sheer lack of creativity puts me off this one.

For my money, Mega Gyrados takes the crown so far, but we have barely scratched the surface here. Although a 33% success rate is a little low. It is hard to judge with such a small sample size, but so far, I think Darkrai and Suicune are here to stay.
