Ngmoco Roll Out Updates To Rolando and Rolando 2

Ngmoco Roll Out Updates To Rolando and Rolando 2

In many respects, ngmoco’s platforming puzzler Rolando was the iPhone title that validated Apple’s mobile as a viable gaming platform. Inspired to some extent - certainly aesthetically - by LocoRoco on PSP, Rolando rolled onto iPhone in December 2008, complete with jaunty music supplied by Brit DJ Mr Scruff. Whether seduced by Mikko Walamies’s artwork, THAT infuriatingly catchy soundtrack, or the simple swipe-y control mechanism, players weren’t likely to forget the inhabitants of Rolandoland very quickly once installed. Well, the original and its 2.5D-favouring successor Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid are now on sale for 59p, so grab 'em while they're cheap. Even better,…

Gameloft Tease FPS Sequel N.O.V.A: Elite On Facebook

Facebook means many things to many people: For some, it’s a way of keeping up to date with the lives of distant relatives. For others, it’s an excuse to stalk ex-lovers. For video game developers, though, Zuckerberg’s social network is most commonly used as a marketing channel. And Gameloft’s Facebook page is one of the more vibrant and fertile, the company often engaging their community to perform shameless acts of shilling. See Exhibit A for proof. In celebration of acquiring 300,000 Facebook ‘Fans’, the French publishers have released a teaser image for the next iteration in the N.O.V.A. series, subtitled Elite. Don’t get too excited, mind. It’s only a bit of artwor…

New Beginnings and an Introduction (or two)

Over the last year I've had the immense pleasure of creating content for you, the readers, however those of you who follow AppSpy may have noticed a significant gap in our production. If you happened to follow AppSpy's other social feeds you may know that due to circumstances outside of my grasp this project had to cease and as such I had to be let go. First things first, I should thank those that sent their support - I really enjoy making these reviews and it's great to know that they're enjoyed equally by our readers. I say 'our' as AppSpy has now transitioned to a new company and you'll be seeing some new faces on the site and we'll be working on getting things moving again while…

Grasshopper Donate Sales From Frog Minutes To Japan

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about a pair of iOS sites AppsJP.com and iPhoneGamerUK who had come together for the Japanese relief effort. In addition, local gaming giants Capcom and Sega have recently pledged revenue from their iPhone titles to organisations helping to rebuild the afflicted nation. Japanese developer Grasshopper - best known for its GameCube hit Killer 7 and No More Heroes on Wii - have joined their compatriots today in raising funds for victims of the tragedy. All proceeds from the sales of Frog Minutes on iPhone and iPad will be donated by Grasshopper to the Japanese Red Cross. This amphibian collection game aims to put you at one with nature, so that you can exp…

Remedy are entering the iOS top-down racing scene tomorrow with their car combat game Death Rally. A Moon For The Sky Goes Free For Unspecified Time

Egg Ball have made their casual pick up and play puzzler A Moon For The Sky free for an undetermined period on both iPhone and iPad. At the dawn of the millennium, the world of Astrolunia is thrown out of kilter when its Moon begins to wither. Luckily for all concerned, a new moon is harvested relatively quickly, leaving you with the onerous task of bouncing the orb safely into orbit. Draw a line under your celestial body and watch it rebound past obstacles galore, collecting stars and earning achievements in the process. Well, that’s the theory. Should the 18-level campaign prove an insufficient test, A Moon For The Sky’s endless mode will keep you entertained for...ever, we guess.…

Flick Golf Updated With 5 Extra Courses

Though it shares the same basic principles as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, namely shoot your ball as close to the pin as possible, Flick Golf substitutes EA’s realistic approach with a healthy dollop of fun. Full Fat’s addictive flick-based action has now been updated, with five extra courses and an additional gameplay mode (Quickshot Pro) the standout features. For those rocking iOS 4.1 or higher, Game Center support brings 15 fresh achievements to get your teeth into. And for everyone else, OpenFeint integration takes care of community-based scores and leaderboards. Welcome tweaks to the UI and improvements to the framerate and collision detection make what was already an enjoyable ro…

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 Lands On App Store Fairway

Having rebuilt his personal and professional life after news of his infidelities broke in late 2009, Tiger Woods furthers the rehabilitation process by launching the next iteration of his popular golfing sim on iOS. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 landed on the App Store green overnight, retailing for $6.99 on iPhone. A HD iPad version should emerge from EA’s rough over the next few days, presumably priced at $9.99. In this edition of the long-established franchise, golfers can tee off from eight real-world courses, from St Andrews to Pebble Beach, and step into the metal spiked shoes of Paul Casey and Tiger himself. Facebook integration allows friends to compare their closest to the pin effort…

Gobtron! - Live Hands-On Preview

When I saw the screenshots and videos for Gobtron! by Juicy Beast I just had to get my hands on a copy right away - it looked like too much fun! Fortunately, the developers were more than happy to let me tinker away with an early release. With an expected release date of April 1st (no foolin'), there's still a bit of time left for tweaks and changes, so as always these previews may not be entirely accurate as compared to the release copy. Additional screenshots have also been included after the video and if you're interested, check out the game's website for more info. YouTube Preview: Screenshots:…

iOS Developers Band Together For A Good Cause

iOS Developers Band Together For A Good Cause

Like some sort of guardian angel, the gaming community has often shown its dedication and compassion to great causes with a fervor and spirit that's humbling. With the recent crisis in Japan developers have banded together in order to raise funds for victims in the country and as a special offer many have decided to give their games away for free while directing people to donate to charitable organizations. AppsJP.com and iPhoneGamerUK have banded together to give codes away to those who are willing to donate and the list of available games is nothing short of impressive. Due to the serious damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami in northern part of Japan, AppsJP in collaboration wit…

Gameloft, Dungeon Hunter 2 and Discounts (oh my)

Gameloft, Dungeon Hunter 2 and Discounts (oh my)

Gameloft have recently launched a brand new promo to give their customers a chance to set the price of Dungeon Hunter 2 when it goes on discount later this week (March 12th). The catch is that the final price will be determined by the amount of votes submitted in support of the promo, with each price bracket requiring 2000 votes to reduce the price by another dollar. This does mean a bit of shameless shilling to get a better discount, but it's the jagged little pill you have to swallow if you really want the game to drop from $6.99 to $0.99. If you happen to be wired in to this crazy thing we call the Internets you might just have a Twitter or a Facebook account - heck, you might even be c…

Mission Europa - Live Hands-On Preview

Mission Europa - Live Hands-On Preview

Today we've got a special treat as Ryan Mitchell, the developer of Mission Europa has given us a sneak-peek at this upcoming title. I say 'special treat' because it's not often something this comprehensive makes its way on to the App Store and anyone craving something more substantial than the usual bite-sized games might want to take note of this title. The game itself is set on Europa (the moon orbiting Jupiter, not the tiny island near Madagascar - just to be clear) and all hell has broken loose - probably literally, but now I'm getting ahead of myself. Contact with the colony was lost and you were part of a team sent to investigate what is happening; unfortunately everyone on your ship…

Falling Fred - Live Hands-On Preview

While there's not too many 'falling' style games on the App Store, it seems that they're gaining a bit of steam and Falling Fred by Dedalord games is hoping to step away from the pack thanks to its somewhat 'grizzly' style. One of the main concerns of these sorts of games is that the body you're trying to save acts as a visual blocker, preventing you from being able to make intelligent or quick decisions without placing yourself in danger. Thankfully players can literally remove the problem by breaking off various limbs if they're skilled enough to hit the traps 'just so'. Due to the gameplay requiring tilt controls the way in which I film these previews had to change slightly - leave a co…

Poker With Bob - Live Hands-On Preview

Poker With Bob - Live Hands-On Preview

There was a point at which Poker (especially Texas Hold'em) was nigh-on impossible to avoid - but not without good reason... it's a fun game to play, especially with friends. Video games went a long way to provide an experience similar to that of playing with real people, but in many cases it either lacked personality or was intentionally obtuse to add difficulty to the game. Poker With Bob by Scary Robot strips things back by pitting you against a single opponent, 'Bob', but in a neat twist he has been professionally animated by industry specialist Dustin Adair to not only add life and realism to the character, but to provide a bit of humor as well. The game's set to launch on Friday the…

Volcano Escape - Live Hands-On Preview

After the positive comments we received from our 5 million viewers video, we've decided to stick with the format for our hands-on previews. It's great fun getting to experience a game in a live setting and while there's no-one else there to act as a sounding board, openly discussing some of the issues that crop up really helps to nail them down. Volcano Escape is an upcoming endless platformer from Bravo Game Studios set (not coincidentally) in a volcano as you attempt to (you guessed it) escape! Multiple characters are teased and unlockable by completing various challenges, some of which will require grinding, while others you're likely to obtain naturally as you attempt to climb higher.…
