One of the strangest game crossovers...

Puzzle & Dragons is part match-3 game, and part RPG dungeon crawler. While it won't set the world on fire like, let's say Puzzle Quest, it has a large following, and is carving out its own niche on the App Store. It is also now the home of the strangest game crossover we've ever laid eyes upon. The characters of the recent console release Batman: Origins have invaded the world of Puzzle & Dragons. This is not the first crossover in the history of Puzzle & Dragons, and if the game continues to be successful it won't be the last, but it's certainly an odd pairing to be sure. The content is available in an event specific dungeon that launches today on the 30th…

Pathogen - an intriguing game of cellular combat

With the release of Pandemic a couple weeks ago, virus based multiplayer games on the iOS are becoming a thing. Have a look at this trailer for the upcoming Pathogen. I am not ashamed to admit that after watching this a couple times, I am a little confused about how the game works, but none the less, am excited to give it a go upon release (especially with friends). Planning to overtake huge swaths of the board in a single chain reaction looks to be a blast. No price has been set but the game will be out on the App Store next week on November 7th.…

Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies receives a launch date

A little over a week ago, we revealed that the sequel to Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, was being released before the end of the year. Luckily it turns out that fans of the popular turn based dog-fighting strategy title don't have to wait that long at all. The iOS version will be out on the App Store on November 7th, two days after the PC release. Both versions will cost $4.99. It makes sense that with only two months left that we wouldn't be waiting too long, but this is a pleasant surprise. Here's hoping it's worth the wait!…

Defeat Oslim the Deathless Bloodmage in Infinity Blade III update

Chair will release the first update pack for Infinity Blade III on October 31st. The Soul Hunter update, which was revealed on InfinityBlade.com, brings a new quest to the IB III campaign. This story arc sees facing off against the heavily armoured - and rather tall - Oslim the Deathless Bloodmage.  As the Worker of Secrets wants Oslim to reduce heroes Siris and Isa to a fine meat paste, he's equipped him with not one, but two Infinity Blades. Take him down, however, and those blade are yours to keep. Along with adding some gameplay tweaks (including reduced potion, gem and forge times), the update will also let you revisit old battlegrounds and unlock new areas. The Holiday Helm…

[Updated] Oculus Rift VR headset coming to Android before iOS

Updated at 22:05 GMT: Since the publication of this article, VentureBeat has amended its story with the following: "Correction 10:50 a.m. Pacific time: The Oculus Rift will support Android, not iOS, as this story originally stated. We regret the error." Sorry guys - false alarm. Original story follows: Oculus VR, the company responsible for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, will be releasing an iOS-compatible version of its 3D goggles for use with mobile games. According to a report by VentureBeat, the announcement was made this morning by Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe. Speaking during his keynote at GamesBeat 2013, Iribe said: "We have some exciting plans of the mobile VR side…

Weird weather and windmills in strange Tiger Style teaser site

After the slice of sci-fi excellence that was Waking Mars, and the anrachnid-themed addictiveness of Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, we at AppSpy were always going to be excited to see what developer Tiger Style would come up with next. The answer, if the URL of this recently launched teaser site is to be believed, is a project called Blackbird Estate. After agreeing to give the site your location details, you are presented with an image of rural landscape featuring a windmill in the background and a tower in foreground. In the window of the tower, a silhouette of a man can be seen. At the bottom right of the screen are the words "Three things cannot be long hidden: The Sun…

Machinarium dev reveals surreal sequel Samorost 3

If you're exclusively an iOS gamer, your only encounter with the creative wizardry of developer Amanita Design will be the studio's delightful point-and-click adventure Machinarium. However, before it  started sending rusty robots off on perilous quests, the studio was busy shooting gnomes into space in its first interactive effort, Samorost. Released for free in 2003, the surreal adventure set the tone for Amanita Design's future efforts. Though it's been a full eight years since Samorost 2, a recently released teaser trailer shows that the developer hasn't forgotten its marvellously mad roots. The video (above) is the first teaser trailer for Samorost 3. The fellow playing the sp…

Mimpi Review

Mimpi is a game for anyone who has ever wondered what's going on inside their dog's mind when its asleep. The answer, according to this arty puzzle platformer, is that man's best friend is exploring bizarre abstract environments, manipulating clouds, and chatting with Chihuahua headed mermaids. You control Mimpi using the arrows on screen. The movement and jump animations are a little stiff, but luckily, precision platforming is not what the majority of the game is about. Instead, th…

Fright Heights Review

Games which revolve around hotel management usually involve trying to fill up your holiday inn by attracting as many guests as possible. Chillingo's spooky scare-'em-up Fright Heights, on the other hand, is all about scaring guests away. It's essentially a block puzzler in which you arrange guests and ghosts throughout the hotel to clear out floors and empty the building. Each floor has a fear rating which must be hit in order wipe it from the screen. To cajole your guests into paroxi…

The Stormglass Protocol is a new type of room escape game

The Stormglass Protocol is a new type of room escape game

My knowledge of room escape games is limited to the Zero Escape series (I'm about twenty hours into Virtue's Last Reward at the moment), but I am quite familiar with their popularity, especially as browser games. The Stormglass Protocol looks to envelop the room escape puzzle experience in dark humour and intrigue. Tying together these room puzzles within larger context should work well, and the trailer makes it look interesting if nothing else. Have a look for yourselves. The game is out for free on the App Store. The first three rooms are free, with the rest being unlocked through in-app purchase. The email we received from the developers makes it sound like this is only…

Expansion packs for Galaxy on Fire 2 now half price

The expansion packs for gorgeous space-based shooter Galaxy on Fire 2 are now available for half price. If you're unfamiliar with the free-to-play blaster, Galaxy on Fire 2 puts you in control of a fighter vessel, and asks you to zip around the universe zapping enemies and trading goods with other space-faring types. The first update, entitled Valkyrie, expanded the Galaxy on Fire universe further, adding new missions, plus a host of extra weaponry, characters, and ships. After Valkyrie came the Supernova update. This expansion let you do battle in the radioactive glow of a recently exploded star. It also featured new missions and gear, including a shield capable of dealing with gamma r…

Season 2 of The Walking Dead to be unveiled tomorrow

Having already received plaudits for the first episode of The Wolf Among Us, Telltale is about to lift the mortuary sheet from a soon-to-be reanimated corpse. Yep, you guessed it: The second series of The Walking Dead: The Game is about to be revealed.  The news, which broke when Telltale posted a teaser image on its Facebook page, will likely excite fans of the multi-award-winning first season. We at AppSpy have been on tenterhooks since July's satisfying DLC stopgap episode The Walking Dead: 400 Days, and can't wait to see what morally compromising situations the developer has cooked up for us this time. Given the tone of the teaser image - which features Clementine's blood…

Hazel Dazzle iPad Review

Hazel Dazzle iPad Review

Hazel is a budding archaeologist who is trying to stop an evil doctor from using the ruins of an ancient race for his own nefarious purposes. The game she inhabits, Hazel Dazzle, is an action adventure that borrows from the spinning, spherical levels of Super Mario Galaxy, and combines them with more traditional dungeon-crawling sections. Unfortunately, though this marriage of gameplay styles can work, Hazel Dazzle is a shallow experience which is afflicted by some irritating tech…

Infinity Danger Review

When you first pick up Infinity Danger, you might find yourself wondering where the rest of the game went. Imagine a bullet-hell shooter in which all the levels have been stripped away. So, instead of fighting waves of enemies to get to an end boss, you engage in one timed boss battle after another. Now imagine you're fighting same boss every time, chipping away at layer upon layer of modular evolution to reveal the heart of the ship, and blast it smithereens once more. After your fi…

Tilt To Live 2 looks pretty redonkulous

We heard the rumours that One Man Left Studios was working on a sequel to their critically acclaimed dot avoider Tilt To Live. With the release of this trailer, these rumours have been confirmed! One of the strengths of the original game was to show how resposive and nuanced tilt controls could be on the iPhone, and judging from the trailer, everything that made the original such a joy to play has been expanded. Have a look for yourselves! The plan is for the game to be released sometime in November but there is no confirmation of that at this current time. We'll let you know as soon as we do, because this is something I'm personally looking forward to taking for a test drive as…
