If you've been slinging cards in Hearthstone for a while now then you might well be looking for more adventures to embark upon. The new Curse of Naxxramas update should be just what you're after if that's the case, as it adds five new Wings to the single player campaign of Hearthstone. The first of these Wings is titled The Arachnid Quarter, and will be free for a limited time during launch. After that it will join the rest of the Wings as a piece of paid content, unlockable with real money or Gold. Each Wing will set you back $6.99 / £4.99. Upcoming CCG Assassin’s Creed Memories lets you hop through history

Ubisoft has joined forces with Gree and PlayNext to deliver an all new free-to-play installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise: a CCG called Assassin’s Creed Memories. Digital card-battling has been increasing in popularity recently. The genre’s ability to mix the card combat with RPG leveling and strategic elements have sucked players in, while the booster-pack IAPs have attracted publishers and developers. Ubisoft seems to be planning to tap directly into this popularity, utilising its Assassin’s Creed franchise as the foundation. Inviting you into a new mobile Animus, you have to travel through history with the aim of building a powerful guild, recruitin…

Hands-on with Star Admiral, the space-faring collectible card game sans the cards

Hands-on with Star Admiral, the space-faring collectible card game sans the cards

Treading a very thin line between collectible card game (CCG) and straight up strategy game, Star Admiral is as satisfying to play as it is a unique proposition. You're given a fleet (or deck), and must play ships (cards) in a tactical manner, attacking your opponent, and setting up traps in case of retaliation. I've really enjoyed my time with the game thus far, trying to collect as many of the 100 units on offer as possible, and challenging other players in online PvP. Star Admiral is currently in soft launch, and comes to iOS and Android soon. In the meantime, check out my hands-on impressions...…

Resident Evil invades zombie CCG RPG Deadman's Cross

Square Enix's zombie-styled collectible card game Deadman's Cross has just received an extra dose of undead. Thanks to a collaboration with Capcom, Resident Evil cards and quests are being added to the game for a limited time. Deadman’s Cross battles are the typical CCG fare, with the card combat linked by first-person hunts through the 3D world of New Livingstone. Now Raccoon City is being added to the list of areas available for you to stalk through. Along with the new environment, this crossover features a host of other Resident Evil themed extras. Cards featuring monsters from the Resident Evil series are available for you to collect and battle with, including the iconic N…

SOULCALIBUR Unbreakable Soul Review

SOULCALIBUR Unbreakable Soul Review

Soulcalibur Unbreakable Soul is an odd instalment in the Soulcalibur franchise. This mobile, free-to-play game abandons the weapons-based arcade combat for which the series is famous, and instead focuses on the stories of its colourful cast to form the foundation for a collectible card game. In Unbreakable Soul’s defence, the CCG elements have been fairly well though out. You have a deck that can hold three fighter cards, each of which is assigned three weapon card. Each ch…

Blizzard’s collectible card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft arrives on iPad

Blizzard’s take on the collectible card genre, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, has just been released on App Store for iPad. Hearthstone mines Blizzard’s popular World of Warcraft series as inspiration for its wolrd and characters. The depth of the franchise's lore ensures hundreds of different cards from which to build your deck, each with their own rules and art. The various card combinations offer a vast array of tactical options for CCG fans, while anyone who has played WoW will have a convenient shorthand for many of the individual card’s rules. Battles can be fought against other players, or against computer-controlled heroes from the WoW …

CCG tower defence game Defenders is out now on the App Store

Nival’s take on the tower defence genre, Defenders, has just made the jump from PC to iOS. Adding a collectible card game element to the standard tower defence gameplay, Defenders has you build and customise a selection of towers over 23 levels. You collect cards - and in turn towers - by completing levels. You can also choose to fuse cards you are not using, creating towers with new abilities. All of the original PC game's visual and audio seems to be present in this port. This means on smaller screens that the combat can become quite busy. Luckily, a pinch of the screen will zoom you into the action to ensure that you aren't accidentally throwing up towers in the wrong places. P…

IAP-free CCG Card City Nights is available on the App Store now

Collectible card games were the original free-to-play experience. Having to buy booster packs of cards (micro-transactions, if you will)  to improve your deck offered the thrill of gambling with none of the financial reward. All of which makes Ludosity's Card City Nights a little odd, as it's single player CCG which offers no IAPs. Buying the game will get you access to all of its 180 cards, which can be earned by playing through the eight-hour campaign. Card City Nights also adds positional play and combos to the CCG formula. Playing out on a 3x3 grid, the game is all about positioning cards in relation to others to activate powers. Once cards are fused, it is up to y…
