Elysian Shadows promises to be a next-gen 2D RPG

If you're itching for something like the RPGs of 16-bit yore, only with a modern sheen, then by jove you're in luck. Elysian Shadows is an upcoming Kickstarter-backed isometric 2D Action RPG that's managed to nab well over half its required funding in just 10 days. Yes, we have the odd retro-inspired RPG plop on to the App Store every fortnight or so, but this team is aiming to "push the envelope" by fusing 16-bit charm with modern techniques. In Elysian Shadows, you'll be able to lob anything in your inventory at baddies, bask in 3D lighting for 2D sprites, and witness the spectacle of particle physics that I have no idea how to explain. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the ga…

Upcoming CCG Assassin’s Creed Memories lets you hop through history

Ubisoft has joined forces with Gree and PlayNext to deliver an all new free-to-play installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise: a CCG called Assassin’s Creed Memories. Digital card-battling has been increasing in popularity recently. The genre’s ability to mix the card combat with RPG leveling and strategic elements have sucked players in, while the booster-pack IAPs have attracted publishers and developers. Ubisoft seems to be planning to tap directly into this popularity, utilising its Assassin’s Creed franchise as the foundation. Inviting you into a new mobile Animus, you have to travel through history with the aim of building a powerful guild, recruitin…

Free-to-play action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is running wild on the App Store

Gamevil’s anime-styled action RPG Kritika: Chaos Unleashed has just been launched on the App Store. This free-to-play RPG takes the emphasis away from in-depth story telling and shifts it squarely onto combat. Battling enemies and bosses in tight arenas, the action is fast and frantic, with your characters hacking and slashing their way through all in their path. When you aren’t fighting, its time to visit the workshop where you can sharpen your skills and enchant your weapons to increase your chances in battle. Just in case you begin to tire of the main quest, then Kritika also provides two additional modes. Monster Wave is an endless string of battles for you to engag…

Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is an action RPG from Gamevil, pre-registration event has exclusive limited-time avatars up for grabs

In-depth and incredibly involving traditional RPGs are all well and good, but sometimes you just want to fight enemies, crush bosses, gain experience, collect loot, and enjoy the pleasant combat-focused grind of an action RPG. Gamevil's Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is hoping to scratch that particular itch when it's released upon the App Store and Google Play on the 15th of July. The gameplay is very much hack-and-slash, with characters that will sport different abilities and moves: the Berserker is a big heavy powerhouse, while the Cat Acrobat is more nimble. When you're not fighting you'll be in the workshop crafting and enhancing weapons to improve your chances in combat, and your skills…

MONSTER HUNTER FREEDOM UNITE for iOS Review

When starting Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS, it helps to know what you're getting into. It promises you the chance to bring down monstrous creatures in a fantasy equivalent of big game hunting, but it makes you work for every moment of enjoyment. Before heading into the field you have to familiarise yourself with the basics. As a port of a PSP title, there are a lot of controls crammed onto your touchscreen. The result is confusing mash of context dependent virtual st…

Final Fantasy creator goes free-to-play with his next game Terra Battle

The acclaimed designer and director of the Final Fantasy franchise, Hironobu Sakaguchi is going free-to-play with his upcoming mobile RPG Terra Battle. Coming from a translated Famitsu article, information on Terra Battle is still a little sparse. While it is being built around a free-to-play model, it is designed to be completable without having to spend any penny - providing you have the patients and time. In the article Sakaguchi also cryptically states that he is hoping to work in collaboration with other game creators on the project. Though it is unclear exactly what this means we would not be adverse to paying for guest director quests that spin-off from the main tale. As wel…

The Witcher Battle Arena brings the fantasy series to iOS as a MOBA

While The Witcher 3 may have been pushed back to 2015, fans of the franchise won’t have to wait that long for their next fix because CD Project has just unveiled The Witcher Battle Arena for iOS. Rather than mimicking the expansive RPG formula of the main series, this mobile take on The Witcher is a MOBA. Like League of Legends and Dota 2, the gameplay revolves around capturing and holding strategic points to gain victory. Where it differs from much of the genre, however, is its focus on short intense battles. Allowing up to six people to play together online, The Witcher Battle Arena offers plenty of game options. You can choose to play in six-way matches, enter into three-on-three…

Epic RPG The Banner Saga coming to iOS this summer

The Banner Saga has made quite the name for itself on PC since it was released earlier this year. Now, developer Stoic Studios has confirmed that the acclaimed RPG is now destined for the App Store. Thrown into in a medieval viking world, you must journey through stunning 2D nordic environments on a mission to save civilization. With over 25 playable characters, there are plenty of ways for this grave story to play out. With every choice you make impacting the story and fate of your characters, each decision must be carefully weighed. Stoic Studio team is made up of ex-Mass Effect developers, so The Banner Saga’s pedigree is not in question. That said, we look forward to seei…

Angry Birds Epic Review

Angry Birds Epic Review

At this point the Angry Birds are more than just feathery projectiles in a physics puzzler. They have become icons that can leap into any medium they choose. Like Mario before them, their first step was into the world of kart racing, and now they have progressed to a strategy RPG with the turn-based Angry Birds Epic. To keep things easy for genre first-timers, Epic does away with exploration of similar titles. Instead it adopts a map that will be familiar to free-to-play fans, with fi…

Battleheart Legacy Review

Battleheart Legacy Review

RPG control systems can be complex. It's impressive, then, to find an RPG title as fully featured as Battleheart Legacy that that lets you access its vast range of mechanics with simple, single taps. Its a good thing the controls are so intuitive, too, because the game offers little in the way of a tutorial. You are shown the basics of how to navigate the world and defend yourself. Touching anywhere on screen will set you on your way, while tapping on an enemy will allow you lock-on a…

Expansive 3D RPG The Shadow Sun gets hefty price reduction

Developer Ossian Studios has sliced the price of its fantasy RPG The Shadow Sun by more than half. The Shadow Sun has you controlling your hero from a third-person perspective through a 3D world. There are ten hours of story to quest your way through, made up of 70 different areas, all filled with their own dangers and secrets. The Shadow Sun takes clear inspiration from other Western-styled fantasy RPGs. This should come as no surprise considering it was developed by industry veterans whose collective works include contributions to Neverwinter Nights, Baldur’s Gate, and The Witcher. The limited time sale has cut The Shadow Sun's price from £5.49 / $7.99 to £1.99…
