The FGC isn't too amused with new King of Fighters AFK gacha game
A classic name in the FGC has now arrived on mobile with the launch of The King of Fighters AFK. With retro graphics, strategic combat, and familiar fighters, this game pays homage to the The King of Fighters IP with a unique twist.
SNK's The King of Fighters comes to Apple and Android devices with AFK, which features dynamic 5v5 team battles. At launch, there are 114 fighters to collect and train, including 36 Legendary fighters. They can fight across 12,600 stages and the content will continue to expand as the game is updated.
Briefly checking out the gameplay, it looks like a typical gacha game. The FGC has been frustrated with AFK since it was announced, since it was made to replace the popular King of Fighters All Stars beat 'em up action game. Having that game replaced by a gacha game has not won over the community, which has not shown the same interest at all so far.
The King of Fighters AFK launch comes with goodies (for those that care)
Over 1.5 million players allegedly pre-registered for AFK, largely from Asia. That's tough to believe as its platforms don't currently have many followers or interactions (especially not positive ones). But if you want to check out AFK, you'll get some cool rewards:
- Server Launch Celebration 7-Day Check-In: Grants valuable rewards, including Ruby. Players will receive a Legendary Fighter Summon Ticket on the 7th day of checking in
- Kyo Kusanagi Pick-Up Event: Players will have a higher chance to obtain Kyo Kusanagi in his KOF ’99 style
Until September 17th, players will have an increased chance to summon fighters with [Fury] Synergy due to the Pick-Up Summon event. So that's cool (although it still requires some gacha luck).
It's probably not the most dignified spin-off for a classic fighting title, but if you just want something simple to mindlessly play on your phone, at least it has some familiar faces.
