I am sure that even some of the biggest fans of the Tomb Raider series won’t know about Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. This is a shame because it is a fun run. You can now experience a short segment of this adventure for free, thanks to it becoming a try-before-you-buy app.

If you jump in expecting an action-adventure shooter full of flips, then you are out of luck. Guardian of Light is instead an isometric game, full of puzzles, some of which are pretty intricate. You will be hunting down Xolotl, the Aztec god of darkness, whom I dare you not to visualise as an axolotl.

You will blaze through hordes of the undead using twin-stick shooting, which translates pretty well to touchscreen devices. These are fully customisable too, or you can switch to gamepad support instead. However you play, you will be delighted to hear that the free levels can even be enjoyed in full online co-op.

Speaking from experience, co-op is the best way to play Guardian of Light. It was a lot of fun taking on the puzzles where you had to swing around with a pal. If you choose to upgrade and purchase the full game, you will be able to carry over your progress and your scores into the full version.

Not only this, but you will, of course, be able to complete the remaining 12 stages as well, each packed with dual-wielding action and the tricky tombs we all love. There are collectables to find and not return to museums, as well as extra weapons and artefacts that give Lara access to whole new ways to blow holes in ancient stonework.

You can try out the first two levels of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light on Android and iOS, with the full unlock costing you $9.99.
