We have arrived at a sad day; we have proof that my boy Lucario can’t carry a project single-handedly. The Pokémon Company, in conjunction with developers TiMi Studio Group, has announced that Pokémon Unite is set to close its MOBA doors on March 23rd, 2027. You can’t even seek sanctuary on the Switch version. Unite is going for good.

Reading from the official statement, the reason given is… none. There is simply a thank you for playing. Fans do have two pieces of good news, however. The first is that the dedicated Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo is still going ahead on March 20th and 21st.

If you want to get involved and be in with a chance to be the permanent Unite champion, qualifiers will start on December 5th. It is the last hurrah before Nintendo throws it in the mulcher a mere two days later. The second morsel of good news is the Library feature. Players who download the required data before the shutdown will be able to view certain records and in-game content after closure. It is not much, but a better alternative to playing League of Legends.

There will be a special event to look forward to starting November 12th, where players can earn items such as Holowear and Licenses to experience everything the game has, but the end is in sight. As tragic as this news is, any closure is, I think we all expected this to happen at some point. Unite was online for five years, and how often did you actually hear about it? Nintendo released it into the wild to fend for itself, minus a few new characters and forms.

On a very non-Nintendo note, players will no longer be able to sign up for the Unite Club, effective immediately. Automatic renewals will also be disabled. Unlike Nintendo, not to be greedy. If you want to experience the MOBA fun before shutdown, download Pokémon Unite from the App Store or Google Play.
