Are big changes coming to Wild Rift after League Next in 2027?
We got some biiiig news today for League of Legends players.
A report from Bloomberg has all-but confirmed that Riot is working on a massive overhaul of League of Legends. Previously called League of Legends 2, the project is now being internally referred to as League Next.
And it could be here as early as 2027.
What does League Next mean for Wild Rift?
In Bloomberg's report, five past and present Riot employees told reporter Cecilia D'Anastasio that League of Legends was getting a huge update to its visuals and technology.League of Legends players have been complaining for quite some time about the game's cruddy, old infrastructure, so this makes a lot of sense. So far, we expect to see a fresh new look to the arenas and champions, although nothing was mentioned when it comes to gameplay and kit designs. This isn't really an update for esports players, but newcomers who want to see a fresh, new look.
Wild Rift wasn't mentioned in the Bloomberg report, but I wouldn't be surprised if the mobile version of the MOBA received a visual overhaul as well.
Riot makes the bulk of its League of Legends money through cosmetics and other in-game purchases. Giving the champions new looks and new cosmetics makes a lot of sense. And why not bring the same changes over to Wild Rift for a chance at even more new players and purchases on mobile?
Wild Rift currently has over 50M downloads on Google Play and 6.7M downloads on Apple Play. Tapping into this massive playerbase with refreshed looks and new cosmetics doesn't seem like a bad idea.
Just like League of Legends, Wild Rift has seen a declining player count over the last year. As of late 2025, there are about 3.5 to 3.7 million active monthly users. A brand new look and feel could bring players back and get them to buy more cosmetics.
Or maybe we're just coping because we want the update too! C'mon Riot!
