Remember back when PUBG basically invented the battle royale genre, and then Fortnite came along, copied it, and then blew it out of the water? I used to feel bad for Krafton; however, after this week alone, I don’t really anymore. It feels like they are just scrambling right now.

Yesterday, you might have seen our coverage of PUBG Mobile crossing over with Skibidi Toilet which, fair to say, I am not a huge fan of. It feels like they are aiming for the younger demographic that Fortnite surged to popularity with, but they missed it quite badly. Skibidi Toilet was a huge pop culture moment, sadly, but it feels like they hitched their wagon to it much too late.

It reminds me of that Steve Buscemi “fellow kids” meme, or your elderly grandparents trying to connect with you over some YouTube video, just much less endearing. PUBG was the serious choice, Fortnite was the kooky one.

Stay in your lane.

At least the new PUBG Mobile mode that launched, Unfail, is more mature. Which might be its only praise. The name looks to be quite ironic.

Basically, Kraton saw Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th and went yes, that for us. It is your classic five-player match, with survivors running from The Predator, not affiliated with the music. The survivors can hide behind pallets, slide through electric barriers, or blast the hunter with fire extinguishers to blind them. There's also health-reviving berries, and a variety of tools to help repair terminals and the like.

The Predator, on the other hand, can pull in their victim, slow their movements, and turn invisible. Still not related to the movie. And that is about it. Just a constant cycle of this one setup. There are no multiple hunters, no special survivors, and honestly, it looks like it isn't that scary. They took asymmetric horror and stripped out the horror, then pared it back to the bare bones. Hopefully, future updates add more, but right now, PUBG Mobile is missing the mark all over.

You can try this undercooked PUBG Mobile mode on Android and iOS now.
