PUBG Mobile's 4.1 update sees content and balance changes ahead of Global Championship
PUBG Mobile's 4.1 update has a focus on growing its esports scene, with changes to competitive gameplay and accessibility.
The PUBG Mobile scene has been growing the last few years, with Krafton dumping money into the grassroots side of things as well in hopes of bringing in fresh competitors and new fans ahead of the Global Championship 2025. The effort has also trickled into the game itself, with 4.1 showcasing a focus on competitive improvements.
PUBG Mobile changes after update 4.1
All aspects of PUBG Mobile gameplay are seeing changes in 4.1. The first? A new location is being added to Erangle, a snowy tundra full of high-tier loot called Penguin City. This area is great for grabbing game-changing weapons, but everyone will be alerted if you open a chest there. Some of the new weapons include the Winterland Kar98K, a snow-themed version of the Kar98K that slows down enemies when it blasts them with ice. As a Mei main in Overwatch... Yes, please!
Another fun addition is the Magic Ice Skates, a consumable that creates an ice path for zippier movement. You can also throw a Swordfish Syringe at a teammate to heal them. And there's a penguin snowmobile! I also quite like the new NPCs around the area, including the Gunsmith Poloar Bear that can equip you with weapons after completing missions.
But what about the esports?
On top of the flashy new content, 4.1 also has balance updates that will impact the way pros play the game. This includes reducing assault rifle's drop-off to make them better at longer range and making sniper rifles more stable, allowing pros to target teams from afar for better strategy. However, shotgun's close-range damage is increased, inspiring more aggression when needed.Another interesting change is the ability to carry enemy loot boxes. Instead of checking for fallen loot in the open, players can bring it to a safer spot.
Spots around Erangle have also been changed. This may create more drop zone options, now that areas offer more maneuverability.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out at the PUBG Mobile Global Championships later this month. 4.1 also has a new streamlined tournament application process so we will hopefully see even bigger growth after the championship and into the new year.
