Roblox cracking down on Charlie Kirk assassination content
Roblox has been spending the last few days removing user-made games inspired by Charlie Kirk's assassination. While Charlie Kirk was a controversial public figure who often made harmful statements about minority groups, LGBTQ+, and women, Roblox stated that the game is not the place for hate against anyone no matter their views.
Kirk was assassinated on September 10th while arguing about gun violence at Utah Valley University. The reactions have been mixed, with extremes on both end of the spectrum. The much-discussed moment in history started to make its way into Roblox until Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna said Apple should remove Roblox due to the user-made content.
Following the controversy, Roblox confirmed it was removing all user-generated content that referenced Kirk. "I am saddened by the passing of Charlie Kirk," said CEO David Baszucki. "Our Community Standards prohibit content and behavior that re-enacts specific real-world violent or sensitive events or promotes terrorism or hatred against individuals or groups, and we do not allow any image or video sharing in chat. "In addition to automated scans, our moderation team is taking swift action. If anyone sees content that violates our policies, please flag and we will rapidly review."
As a result, over 100 experiences were removed from Roblox. These had been created by users within 24 hours of the assassination. It's unclear what the experiences had contained, but any reference to real-life violence is against Roblox's Community Standards.
On September 12th, Tyler Robinson was announced as the main subject in the Kirk assassination. The bullet casings had contained references to Helldivers 2 as well as messages hinting that Kirk is a fascist and Nazi. No matter how gamers feel about Charlie Kirk, his rhetoric, and his passing, Roblox is not the platform to express any feelings about the matter.
