Hands-on with Modern Combat 5: Blackout, Gameloft's bombastic shooter sequel

This week sees the launch of Modern Combat 5: Blackout, the fifth instalment in Gameloft's gung-ho military shooter series. As before, the game laces you into the steel toecaps of a battle-hardened soldier on a mission to do something brave and / or heroic. This mission involves handling enough high-powered weaponry to make Stallone weep, and taking out wave after wave of anonymous army dudes until all of the bullets in the world are gone. Ahead of its release on Thursday, we've gone hands-on with the first level Modern Combat 5: Blackout for your viewing pleasure. Check out the video below to see the game in action.…

There's a link to the full list of winners at the bottom of this very article. The Best Arcade and Action Game was nabbed by Eurocenter's multiplayer gangster sim GraalOnline Era. Hands-on with Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers, the approachable yet utterly hardcore collectible card game

Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalkers is out now on iPad and Android, so we grabbed a copy of the game and fired it up to throw around some magic-imbued cards. We've covered the game closely - from pre-release builds, to surprise launches - and thankfully we've not been left wanting with the finished product. Though the initial game is free to download, after the first campaign you'll need to cough up some cash for each chapter, or buy them in bulk upfront. It's a premium product, with a premium price tag, and as I note in my video below, it'll be interesting to see how well that goes down, now that the free-to-play HearthStone is out and in direct competition with it. Are you a Magic: T…

Transworld Endless Skater Review

Transworld Endless Skater Review

The Tony Hawk series popularised the skateboarding genre back on the original Playstation. It's twitch-based gameplay made it perfect chasing high scores with friends, but proved difficult to replicate on touchscreen. Transworld Endless Skater has taken that trick-fueled formula and strapped on a unique control system to create a skateboarding endless runner. Once rolling, your skater moves forward automatically. You can switch between three lanes by swiping the bottom-left of th…

Upcoming CCG Assassin’s Creed Memories lets you hop through history

Ubisoft has joined forces with Gree and PlayNext to deliver an all new free-to-play installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise: a CCG called Assassin’s Creed Memories. Digital card-battling has been increasing in popularity recently. The genre’s ability to mix the card combat with RPG leveling and strategic elements have sucked players in, while the booster-pack IAPs have attracted publishers and developers. Ubisoft seems to be planning to tap directly into this popularity, utilising its Assassin’s Creed franchise as the foundation. Inviting you into a new mobile Animus, you have to travel through history with the aim of building a powerful guild, recruitin…

Hands-on with Ninja Up, the high-jumping twitch timewaster

Hands-on with Ninja Up, the high-jumping twitch timewaster

We're used to seeing ninjas portrayed as shadowy figures, most often found skulking around bamboo forests and running silently over rooftops. Gameloft's latest arcade iOS game Ninja Up throws stealth and subterfuge out of the window, focusing instead on catapulting a ninja warrior up the side of an office block in broad daylight. Rather than controlling the ninja directly, you must draw small elastic ropes onto the screen. These act as trampolines which propel your vertically ascending hero higher and higher. There are girders to avoid, and weird helicopter dudes who threaten to chop you into little ninja pieces. You can download Ninja Up for free on iPhone and iPad right now. To see wha…

Learn how to play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite with AppSpy - Episode 1

Monsters are jerks. Swaggering around with their gigantic crab-like claws and magical fire breath, playing 'who can chomp the most humans in a single bite' while they clear the bones of your relatives out of their monster bin. However, we at AppSpy have decided we're not going to take their crap any longer. Every Friday, Peter, Harry, and I are meeting up on the AppSpy Twitch channel to play the newly-released iOS version of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Starting from scratch, the three of us are going to learn the ropes, improve our weapons and skills, and work our way through the game's enormous bestiary of dangerous and exotic creatures. And damn it, we're going to take out every las…

Hands-on with Zombie Commando, the undead-immolating team blaster

Hands-on with Zombie Commando, the undead-immolating team blaster

Upon seeing the title Zombie Commando appear in my App Store listings, a little part of me immediately wanted to switch off my iPhone, dive under a duvet, and sleep until this whole zombie craze finally blows over.  However, having ignored my kneejerk cynicism and download the game regardless, I can report that Zombie Commando is a little more interesting than its name might suggest. Rather than taking control of a lone warrior, you get direct a team of up to eight characters around an undead-infested world, blasting your way to freedom with machine guns and flame-throwers, and cracking skull with baseball bats. The controls are super streamlined, with one virtual sticks guiding your…

Broken Sword 5 - The Serpent's Curse: Episode Two slithers its way to iPhone and iPad

Broken Sword 5 - The Serpent's Curse: Episode Two slithers its way to iPhone and iPad

The concluding half of crowd-funded point-and-click adventure Broken Sword 5 - The Serpent's Curse has just been released on iOS. Revolution founder and series mastermind Charles Cecil states that "Episode Two ramps up the level of drama, as the adventure bursts out from Paris and London, taking the player on to stunning locations throughout Spanish Catalonia and to deepest Iraq, the birthplace of civilisation". Fans will no doubt find this focus on the dramatic positive, as reviews of the first part of the game were a little lacklustre. This surprised some, especially as the Director's Cut of the original title was so widely lauded. If you're interested in seeing how the story - f…

Minecraft - Pocket Edition receives infinite worlds in 0.9.0 update

There is something quite poetic about the way Minecraft - Pocket Edition has you incrementally building a world, while Mojang incrementally bolts on extras to the game around you. However, now it seems that the company has pulled out all the stops with the massive 0.9.0 update, bringing the mobile game's feature set far closer to its PC and console cousins. The most exciting of these changes is that Minecraft - Pocket Edition now features infinite worlds. If you're counting, that's a lot of worlds. Its not just hills and plains for as far as the eye can see either, because 0.9.0 brings a vast range of new environmental features. These include caves, mine-shafts, lakes, and villages f…

Hands-on with Kritika: Chaos Unleashed, the action RPG starring the angriest man ever

We've covered Kritika: Chaos Unleashed quite closely here at AppSpy, ensuring you fine folks got word of the pre-registration event for exclusive items, and news that the game is available right now for iOS and Android devices. The coverage continues today with our hands-on video, and let me tell you, I have not been disappointed with what I've played thus far. Combat in Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is fast and plentiful, occurring in confined arenas with plenty of enemies ready to be cut down. Boss battles with larger creatures require a little more tactical thinking as you work out their attack patterns. When you're not knocking baddies for six, you're upgrading your weaponry and armour to b…
