Dream Tim
No, that's not a typo, it's the name of a new runner game coming out to the App Store on March 6th. This one boasts story progression through mission completion, interesting power-ups in the form of potions, and a swipe mechanic to destroy enemies as you're running along. Take a look at the trailer.…
Penumbear Review
Penumbear by Taco Graveyard and Bulkypix doesn't pull any punches. All too often the App Store finds itself burdened with titles that evoke the likeness of games we know and love, but so few go as far as to understand what made them great and come up with something entirely new in the process. With nothing more than the ability to run back and forth, jump, and activate various switches in the world, you'll need to solve a complex series of stages that beg you to scratch a little deepe…
Watch The Video ReviewCognition: Episode One hits the App Store
The iPad is slowly becoming a second home for the point and click adventure, a point hammered home with the release of Phoenix Online Studios's Cognition: Episode One. The game casts you as Erica Reed, an FBI agent who has the power of post-cognition. She can pick up objects and see what happened to them in their past. Now she's on the trail of four killers, and one of them knows about her power. Cue lots of object finding, mysterious puzzle solving, and some gorgeous looking graphics. If you're a fan of the adventure genre, then you're likely to find a whole lot here to get your pointing and clicking teeth into. Put together by something of an adventure game dream team, Cognition: Episod…
Purple Cape Review
There's something almost sacred about the platformer. There's a formula in place that seems almost immutable: The character runs around the screen (automatically in the case of some) and the player can jump (all the better to reach new areas and avoid or crush enemies). Purple Cape by Lastmoon Games and Forest Moon Games throws out such old-fashioned ideas and tries something entirely new - you don't move at all unless you're jumping. In a way this is the kind of concept that only wor…
Watch The Video ReviewReal Racing 3 (Worldwide Release) Review
Editor's Note: As of the 28th of February the game is live across the world. Updates to the game have resolved minor bugs, however most importantly at the time of this writing 'repairs' no longer take time to complete. You'll still be considerably out of pocket, but it will put you back on the road sooner after taking unavoidable damage (such as from a TSM-controlled AI driver). Despite this the core problem afflicting RR3's playability remains in-tact; the game is devoid of meaningful…
Watch The Video ReviewThe Other Brothers
The Other Brothers is a platformer that was embroiled in a bit of legal trouble last year, and it missed its 2012 release date. Well it looks like the project is alive and well, and is slated for a March release. Visually, it uses a similar art style to Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP, and looks to provide some unique platforming experience. Have a look at the trailer.…
Gemini Rue due out for iOS this Spring
I only discovered developer Wadjet Eye Games last year, and through 2012, i played through Gemini Rue and their Blackwell series (and I have plans to play Resonance soon). They make fantastic adventure games, and now Gemini Rue is being ported to iOS. Here's the original trailer of the game. Gemini Rue is a fantastic sci-fi tale set in a hostile and corrupt galaxy. Adventure game fans should really enjoy this one, and we'll let you know when it's released.…
The Gods: Rebellion Review
Brawlers of various incarnations have always found a home on the App Store. Their charm is simple: You get to punch/stab or otherwise beat up a near endless variety of foes over and over again. It's immediate and it's effective, and barring horrible controls you're going to get some sort of enjoyment out of it. The Gods: Rebellion follows the God of War formula, almost to the letter (albeit with a Chinese mythos instead of a Greek one) making it a familiar - if uninspired - experience…
Watch The Video ReviewGemini Rue coming to iOS devices
If you like your point and click adventures gritty, old skool, and set in the reasonably distant but still recognisable future, then Wadjet Eye Games has a special treat in store for you in the shape of Joshua Nuernberger's Gemini Rue. First released in 2011 on PC, the game is set to make its way to the App Store in the next couple of months, bringing with it a graphical adventure that owes its style to the few years in the late eighties and early nineties when pointing and clicking was king. There's scant information on the iOS release just yet, with Wadjet Eye only saying that the game will have a UI that fits more comfortably onto touch screen devices. Which is good, because we didn't w…
Hell Yeah! Pocket Inferno Review
At times I wonder if the incomplete release of a game is the result of hubris on the part of the developer, or a genuine lack of time to bring the pieces together. In any case, no matter how intriguing your idea may be, if it can't stand on its own two feet it's going to have a rough time in the hands of even the most casual of gamers. Hell Yeah! Pocket Inferno is SEGA and Polm Studio's attempt at boiling down the Console and PC release of 'Wrath of the Dead Rabbit', but instead of a g…
Watch The Video ReviewPower Tower mixes Poker with Match 3
The trailer of this game asks if you've ever dreamed of mixing poker with a match-3 game. There has to be someone out there who has right? Well they're going to be really happy with the release of Poker Tower this Thursday on the App Store. Not only is it an interesting idea, trying to match poker hands in this fashion, but the low-fi graphics make it look like it's either on the original GameBoy or one of those portable LCD single game systems. Have a look at the trailer.…
Cyto Review
Editor's Note: While playing Cyto for the video record I noticed the iPhone 5 build did indeed have an aiming arc - it's quite possible older generation iOS devices may not be displaying the arc as either a bug or due to performance issues. Ah, the amnesiac; a video game trope that has lasted the ages and no doubt will be with us until the end of the art form. Cyto is a weird little rubber ball or cell looking creature that wakes up in a strange world not knowing who he is. Not only d…
Watch The Video ReviewJourney to Hell gets a release date and a trailer
The game formerly known as Project Holy Shield, Journey to Hell, has received a new trailer ahead of its imminent launch. And we have to say it's looking like a pretty interesting, gory, third person shooter. You play as one of two members of Project Holy Shield, Gabriel and Rachel, and it's up to you to kill as many terrifying demons as you can. You'll have plenty of weapons to choose, from twin pistols to flame throwers and machine guns. There are 7 levels to fight your way through, and a dynamic “real time render” audio engine to scare the pants off you. The game looks as grim and gritty as you'd expect, and is set to hit the App Store on the 7th of March, or a week on Thurs…
Sporos Review
Infection as a puzzle mechanic; that's what I think of when I play Sporos. This isn't a new concept mind you. Last year's Tentacle Wars comes to mind, but there's something about covering cells using the microscopic entity known as the sporos that I find equally parts engaging and creepy. To extend that factor, this game both contains a laboratory for essential infection and experimental. Now that game never actually states what the sporos is or what you're doing, so I'll stick with my…
Watch The Video ReviewPurple Cape Launching Soon
Josh Presseisen of Crescent Moon Games has let drop on his Twitter feed that Purple Cape by Last Moon Games will be launching in 'a few days'. We might take that as a release this Thursday the 28th, but until we have something more official, check out the trailer to this intriguing platformer. While I may have reservations about Platformers with 'physics' like the one demonstrated in the video (that is to say, Little Big Planet-esque), I can't help but be intrigued by the variety of power-ups, stage designs, and the way previously encountered obstacles are given novel twists. Consider us on the job when it comes to reviewing Purple Cape after it drops on the App Store!…
