Sky Hero™ Review

Your fortress is under attack, a message needs to be relayed to headquarters. What is a brave soldier to do? Why it is his prerogative, nay his duty, to leap from the tower and free fall to victory, avoiding enemy bombardment on the way down. Sky Hero puts you in the floppy pants of such a soldier. Your plummet is closely being followed by a menacing fire beast as well as his minions, which consist of barrels, cannons, and hacksaw carrying birdies. Tilting is the name of the game as y…

App Wrap Up (Weekend Edition, 10th December 2012)

Hey Hey readers, and welcome to another installment of the App Wrap Up! It's been a week or two since last we met, and I have another collection of interesting games that you may have missed that look decent based solely on their trailers. Let's get started! Linked Together (Idol Minds LLC) The expansion of the match-3 genre into giant linked chains for massive points is not a new concept, so what is it about this trailer that resonates? Is it the 'in your face' presentation, or is it the emphasis on multiplayer and a slew of intesting power ups? Whatever the reason, this does look like a lot of fun.[App Store Link] Jellboy (CORVUS GAMES) You've seen those youtube videos abou…

Sphoxie Review

While the iPhone has created a resurgence of 2D platforming titles, the 3D platformer has been kind of neglected. Perhaps it's because the added challenge of creating a camera and a three dimensional space worth exploring is a daunting task, but regardless, it makes it so that when a 3D platformer is released, it's almost a novelty. Sphoxie is such a platformer. You play the titular named character who is a sort of blue sphere who gets sucked into a portal and trapped in a hostile worl…

Square Enix announces Final Fantasy IV for iOS

Square Enix announces Final Fantasy IV for iOS

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy IV is heading to iOS devices on the 20th of December. This is the 3D, enhanced version released on the Nintendo DS in 2008 though, rather than the SNES original. The game tells the story of Cecil, a Dark Knight determined to thwart the evil schemes of a sorcerer called Golbez, who plans to destroy the world using a bunch of crystals. It's expected the game will go on sale for somewhere around $20, which puts it in line with Square's aggressive App Store pricing scheme. To celebrate the forthcoming release, and the fact it's Christmas soon, Square has put some of its other iOS titles on sale, with Final Fantasies I through III all getting discou…

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Review

For those of you out there who are fans of Vice City and used to the quirks of iOS gaming (that is to say, touch-based gaming controls) then I can get you in and out of this review fairly quickly: 'It's everything you loved about the original, but with less adequate - though still useable - controls'. Also it's gorgeous.' For everyone else, lets dig a little deeper. Rockstar Games' second third-person foray in their Grand Theft Auto series is still regarded an all-time classic, even…

Vergence Fated to Appear in App Store

Vergence Fated to Appear in App Store

You don't see too many Metroidvania games on the App Store. Perhaps its that mobile gaming doesn't lend itself to the genre, or that it's hard to get the controls right, but it's good see that there are some out there. Well I'm assuming Vergence: Will of Fate is a Metroidvania game from the description and the trailer. If not, it still looks visually interesting as a platformer, and promises lots of rooms to visit and upgrades to acquire. Here's the trailer. The game is released on December 9th.…

Autumn Dynasty Universal Edition

Autumn Dynasty Universal Edition

Earlier this year, Autumn Dynasty was released for the iPad. It met with some success, but now since they're bringing it to the iPhone as well, they've used the time towards this new release to redesign the interface. So what is Autumn Dynasty? Have a watch of the trailer. It looks like a simple to use real time strategy game wrapped in a gorgeous Japanese brush paining style. This will be one to watch out for on its release next week on December 13th!…

She-Ra turns up in He-Man

She-Ra turns up in He-Man

If you thought there wasn't enough girl power in He-Man: The Most Powerful Game In The Universe, then you're in luck, because the latest update to the game brings with it everyone's favourite princess of power, She-Ra. As well as letting you play as He-Man's twin sister, the new update adds different skins for the menus, and two new levels designed with the alter ego of Princess Adora in mind. We weren't the greatest fans of the game when it came out, but it's still an enjoyable, if ocassionally frustrating, little side scrolling brawler. So if you like your cartoon violence performed by a lady rather than a chap, you could do a lot worse than heading over to the App Store and grabbing th…

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour Review

Gameloft's Modern Combat series has gone from strength to strength and the fourth title, Zero Hour, steps things up once again. Unfortunately there are also strangely archaic hold-overs being dragged in its wake, preventing the big-console inspired game from being an all-time classic. The hold-over I speak of is the AI. By now fans of the series have come to appreciate, and maybe even love the way Gameloft have pitched their controls, giving players access to tight, action-packed leve…

Fans of Horror Games Have a Release to look Forward to this Week

Some of the scariest games are those where you have no weapons, and have to survive by your wits against whatever creepy creature of darkness is trying to do you in. Now personally I can't play any game with horror elements as it affects me too greatly, but for those that enjoy a good spook, The Woods is released on December 7th. Have a look at the trailer. Unfortunetely those with an older iPhone than the iPhone 4 are out of luck, but as a horror experience, it looks plenty atmospheric, and should be a blast... if you like that sort of thing.…
