Back towards the end of the millennium, because we are all just so old now, Konami released a little series called Suikoden on the PlayStation. This is where they peaked, with Suikoden’s I and II being great, and future releases on the PlayStation 2 being lacklustre. Konami went quiet with this series around 2010, but now they are back with a vengeance, announcing Suikoden Star Leap for mobile.

The reveal came during Suikoden Live, an hour-long celebration of the series with music, production interviews, artwork, teasers and more. If you have an hour, it is worth watching the full thing. The highlight for us, however, is of course Suikoden Star Leap.

Star Leap will be set, it will take place between Suikoden V and Suikoden I. That probably only matters from a lore perspective, however, because it seems to be a fully original tale.

Nestled to the east of the monolithic Scarlet Moon Empire is our heroes' village. The son of the village chief, he made his way home after his first successful hunt to much celebration. This changed in an instant, however, as the place suddenly fell under assault. As a result, our hero and their friends struck out into the world on a quest to restore peace to the village, most likely through inflicting just rampant gratuitous violence upon the local wildlife to level up.

There haven’t been many concrete details released this far, but I have noticed one thing that is a little worrying. The official website lists Star Leap as “free to play” on Android and iOS, however, there will be in-game purchases. I am hoping these are just cosmetics, and this won’t be a gacha cash grab. It would be a shame for Konami to resurrect a series only to immediately try to milk it dry
