Pixel Starships receives a massive free update bringing with it new enemy types and some PvP fun
One of my favourite mobile games is hands-down Pixel Starships from Savy Soda. It is an amazing mix of combat, space battles, and base building, and I can’t wait for the sequel to release in August. It is a long wait, though, and happily, the original has received a nice shiny free update.
Dubbed the War Games Expansion, you won’t be surprised to learn that we get a fresh PvP arena. Only the best of the best will conquer here, so you will need to hone your shipbuilding skills. There is also the addition of seasonal leaderboards for those who prefer to compete with numbers instead of firepower.
Speaking of shipbuilding, don’t you hate having to rejig everything when you decide on a new strategy? Well, head to the Laboratory Research screen, and you can unlock Ship Layout saving slots. These allow you to store your Rooms, Crew Modules, and AI setup for easy switching.
Now for the titular War Games. The eponymous challenge will see you going against a host of tough targets, all of whom pack their own special properties. The Juggernaut has multiple Shields, the Lancer can wreck you with its Lasers, the Carrier will swarm you with Crafts, and the Bombardier will turn you into a crater with its Missiles.

Each challenge comes with its own Attack Vectors. Turkey Shoot will task you with taking down as many Crafts as possible, whereas Sabotage grades you on System Damage. Time Trail gives you a time limit, obviously, and Disassemble will see you taking out Droids. There will be more to come, and each will reward you with a ton of loot and exclusive Ribbons.
To beat these missions, you need to come prepared. Each Room has new levels, but you can also get the Defense Hangar from Ship Level 8. This lets you spawn five types of Drones to keep you in the fight. Missile Turret and Laser Turret Drones give you firepower, and the Shield Drone will handle the defense. Repair Drones will, unsurprisingly, repair your ship, and the Missile ECM Drone will act as a beacon for enemy missiles to prevent that damage in the first place.
Pixel Starships is available to download from the App Store and Google Play.
