Despite having already released Lucario ex and therefore never needing to add another card, Pokémon TCG Pocket has decided to crack on and announced its next expansion. Titled Celestial Guardians, this set will focus on characters from Sun and Moon. Remember them? Before the Switch games ruined the series. Give me the full Pokedex again!

One downside of this set is that it is going back to the two-pack system, one for Lunala and one for Solgaleo. Not ideal, but it could be much worse. On the plus side, though, we are getting the Alolan starters, Popplio, Rowlet, and Litten. We are also getting the ex versions of the legendaries, but they aren’t too useful in my opinion.

Lunala ex is a Psychic type, packing a 100 damage attack for three energy, plus an ability that lets you move all Psychic energy from one benched Pokémon to the Active. Solgaleo, on the other hand, is Steel and can deal 120 damage for two energy, with 10 recoil. Their ability also lets you move them from the bench to the Active slot. Neither of these is mindblowing, and worse, they are both Stage 2 evolutions. I don’t predict a meta shift with these.

You can get your hands on another legendary ex starting April 30th, though, with a suite of special solo battles rewarding players with Rayquaza ex. There will also be a promo Rayquaza kicking about. This Normal-type needs 4 energy to attack, and will pick an opponent Pokémon at random four times, and deal 40 damage to it. Given how massively annoying Wugtrio ex is with a similar move, Rayquaza might be one to use.

For those accessory hunters, you can soon show off your collections with a binder cover and display board featuring Rowlet, the best of the Alolan starters. No arguments about the Robin Hood bird. There is also a coin featuring Shaymin in its Sky Form, and a rather cute playmat with Charmander, Piplup, and Rockruff.

Pokémon TCG Pocket is available to download from the App Store and Google Play.
