Hands-on with Call of Duty: Heroes, in which clans of soldiers clash in modern warfare scenarios

If you were waiting for a Call of Duty game to come along that was effectively a take on Clash of Clans, then you're in luck, as Call of Duty: Heroes is currently in soft-launch. We don't know when it'll go global, but we wanted to get an early look at it and bring you our first impressions of this strategy management game with links to the main Call of Duty canon.…

Skylanders Trap Team prank video is directed by Jackass creator, voiced by Adam Carolla, actually quite funny

Here's the deal: Skylanders Trap Team is out soon, and it's awesome. You can watch our review here and gawp at its high definition full console experience loveliness. The game is primarily aimed at kids, and kids are easily tricked by grown-ups - grown-ups like Jeff Tremaine (the co-creator of Jackass) and comedian Adam Carolla. So the pair of them embedded themselves in a toy shop to prank a bunch of kids. What unfolds is a bit brilliant.…

Kapsula Review

What do you get when you combine a futuristic arcade racer with a match-three puzzler? The answer is Kapsula, a peculiar mash-up of genres and ideas from developer Beavl Games. In addition to making you navigate your vehicle around a minimalistic sci-fi cityscape, the game also encourages you to merge with other vehicles by crashing into them. You can then create chains of colour which must be wiped out for points. Pocket Gamer review Harry Slater was a bit bemused by the game, as y…

Goat Simulator Review

Goat Simulator Review

Goat Simulator is a difficult game to review. On the one hand, it's a transparently broken game riddled with bugs, glitches, frame-rate issues, and optimisation problems. On the other hands, however, the whole game is a very conscious joke - one designed to poke fun at the subjective dullness of games like Truck Simulator and Train Simulator. As a result, it can be argued that the game is deliberately broken, and therefore cite its technical weaknessess as part of the joke. Harry Sl…

Check out this footage of Chop Block's endless minimalist platforming

Vital Zigns' latest - Chop Block - is a hardcore platformer, and if you're a regular AppSpy viewer then you'll know I'm a sucker for a hardcore platformer. I'm immediately reminded of Super Meat Boy when watching the newly-released trailer for Chop Block: the minimalist art style, the need for precision, the spinning blades, and so on. Instead of Meat Boy, you'll be playing as Woodman, and it's your job to guide him away from dangers for as long as possible, until you're inevitably chipped. Chop Block is a free-to-play game and will be available on iOS and Android from October 9th.…

Splot is a hardcore platformer coming to iOS at the end of October, and it's got a brand new trailer

We first saw Splot at Pocket Gamer Connects, and were really impressed by its surprisingly tough platforming, spot-on controls, and adorable visuals. A few months after we got our hands-on, Splot now has a release date, a price tag, and a new trailer. The game is coming to iOS (plus Windows and "possibly other platforms" according to the press release), and will be available October 23rd, with $3.99 / £2.49 being the entry price.…

Rogue Wizards is a light-hearted dungeon crawler, and it needs your support on Kickstarter

Rogue Wizards is a light-hearted dungeon crawler, and it needs your support on Kickstarter

Rogue Wizards superficially appears to be a standard dungeon crawler: you enter a dungeon, you fight stuff, you get epic loot, you rinse, you repeat. But look deeper and you'll see that its world is procedurally generated, and no two weapons are the same either. That's quite an ambitious concept, but a very cool one in my book. A bunch of industry bigwigs seem to agree with me, including Dave Brevik (the creator of Diablo) who's calling it "one of the most promising RPGs in years". The game is targeting iOS and Android (and PC and Mac). Want to support it? Head over to Rogue Wizards' Kickstarter.  …

ORBB's official trailer is puzzling bliss

ORBB lands on the iTunes App Store this Thursday the 9th of October. It'll be a premium release, and will set you back $2.99 / £1.99.…

Skylanders Trap Team™ iPad Review

Skylanders Trap Team™ iPad Review

Rather than try to make a spin-off, or a severely compromised portable version, Activision has made Skylanders Trap Team a full console quality experience. It's a sight to behold, and even though it practically requires the Portal be used with it at all times, it's a small price to pay. Watch the video above to hear the full review. Read the review transcript over on Pocket Gamer.…

War Thunder live action trailer commemorates soldiers on the Russian Front during World War II

War Thunder live action trailer commemorates soldiers on the Russian Front during World War II

Video games are a wonderful kind of fantasy: each title a virtual universe governed by its own rules, an alternative reality that can be anything, shaped into whatever we like. The real world is far crueller. It has wars where one side incorrectly believes it has the right to wipe entire races off the face of the Earth. Where people give their lives, willingly or unwillingly, in the pursuit of the ideologies of those in charge. War Thunder's new live action video effort is a surprisingly thoughtful nod to the latter, while promoting one of their products from the former. I can't quite work out if it's in good taste, so I'll let you decide for yourself...…

Hands-on with Skullduggery!, the head-banging, bone-bouncing platformer

Skullduggery! is a game about banging your head against a wall. Not the frustrated 'I've just locked my keys in the car and now I have to walk to Shropshire' headbanging, you understand. No, Skullduggery! is all about tactically bouncing your bonce off of flat surfaces to navigate your way across side-scrolling levels. To reach the the pipe at the end of each maze you must pull back on your brain stem, before releasing your finger and launching your bony face into the great unknown. To see this macabre mechanic in action, check out our hands-on video above.…

Hands-on with Terra Battle, the RPG puzzler from the creator of Final Fantasy

Hands-on with Terra Battle, the RPG puzzler from the creator of Final Fantasy

Terra Battle is an RPG puzzler with a rare pedigree. Though it might not look like it at first glance, this tile-based fantasy experience is the brainchild of Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mastermind behind RPG classics like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. The game's combat system is based around sliding tiles alongside foes to perform attacks. Flank a foe with two heros, and you'll do more damage. There's a rock-paper-scissors dynamic at play which is dependant on whether your your enemy is weilding a sword, a spear, or a bow. This means you have to think about which hero is best equipped to fight each nasty, and how best to align and combine their powers with other members of your squad.…

Monster Hunter Freedom Friday fan video makes us do a little weepy

Our dear Twitch stream regular Curtneedsaride, also known as Curtis Shideler, joined us for our regular Monster Hunter Freedom Unite last Friday and popped the above video in the chat room towards the end of our session. Collecting moments and sound bites from our glorious past broadcasts, it brought tears to the eyes of everyone in the AppSpy office. Very much appreciated Curt - should you ever need that ride we'll be happy to pick you up on the AppSpy bus (er... if it's ever in your neck of the woods). Remember to join us over on Twitch every Friday at 5pm BST / 9am PDT for Monster Hunter Freedom Friday! *mouth horn noises*  …

Hands-on with Marvel: Contest of Champions, the surprisingly sprightly gesture-based brawler

Though we admit that there's plenty of Marvel games on iOS (or any platform, for that matter), it might be worth adding Marvel: Contest of Champions to your watch list. Soft-launched in Denmark only hours ago, the game is a gesture-based brawler in the vein of Injustice: Gods Among Us and Batman: Arkham Orgins. The thing is, where those games always felt kinda slow and gluey on iOS, Marvel: Contest of Champions jumps, spins, and zings around the screen with joyful, hyperactive energy. It'll probably be a while before the game is available worldwide, but check out our hands-on video above to see the game in action. …
