Tasty sushi-based puzzler Umai! will be on the App Store’s conveyer belt tonight

When it comes to puzzle games we think that less is often more, and sushi-munching-monster game Umai! may prove just that when it hits the App Store at midnight. Taking control of a tiny monster surrounded by a conveyer belt of sushi, Umai!’s goal of this charming match-three puzzler is simple - eat as many of the fishy treats as possible. Touching your monster extends its tongue, and tracing a line between sushi of the same type has it slurp them down. A countdown timer keeps the pressure on as you try to beat your previous high-score. Time increases the more you eat, but this doesn’t stop the ticking clock forcing silly mistakes as you race to beat it. There are six differ…

Sega celebrate the World Cup with Football Manager Handheld 2014

After a disappointing start to the World Cup for England, Sega are trying to bring a smile back to the face of English fans by cutting the price of Football Manager Handheld 2014. Sega’s stat filled management sim allows soccer fans the chance to step into the sheepskin coat of their favorite club’s manager or create their own team to lead to victory. Selecting your squad and their tactics before each match puts all of your footie theory to the test. Luckily, thanks to the game’s post-match analysis even losses help, giving you the information you need to tweak your team and ensure future victories. It’s not just the on-field tactics you have to deal with. As man…

(R)evolve Review

We are not huge fans of silly formatting in game titles. However, even we have to concede that (R)evolve is an apt name for a game that has you revolving a tiny planet to give the creatures living on its surface a chance to evolve before they are struck by asteroids. You begin with a single plant on the surface of a tiny globe spinning in space. Holding the right of the screen spins the planet clockwise, while doing the same anywhere on the left will see it move in an anti-clockwise d…

Angry Bird Transformers will have you looking for robots in the skies

With a new movie on the horizon, Transformers fever is about to strike again. To really make the most of this Hasbro has joined forces with Rovio to create Angry Birds Transformers. This partnership means that - like Angry Birds Star Wars - Angry Birds Transformers will be both a game and a toy line.  In keeping with this Hasbro has revealed its line of ‘Telepod’ toys, due for release later this year. These will take a similar path to Activision’s Skylanders series, letting you transport your toys into the game. However, whether Angry Birds Transformers will operate using similar near field communication technology and if it will require an additional peripher…

Environmental physics puzzler Biosis is currently free on the App Store

Kostyantyn Salanda’s organic physics-puzzler Biosis is currently free on the App Store. Dragging a glowing blob through Biosis's puzzles quickly becomes a greater challenge than you would expect. Your tiny globular ward is pretty useless and relies on you to activate a variety of creatures and plants in each stage to push and pull it towards its goal. A slow starting pace gives you plenty of time to come to grips with the game’s world manipulation mechanics. Give it a little time, though, and you will find yourself firing your blob like a cannonball across the map in order to grapple it with a vine before swinging it safely into an exit. Exploring the lush hab…

Fluid SE Review

Fluid SE has you constantly on the brink of anger. It sets you the simple goal of collecting a handful of glowing orbs from around its stylish dark arenas but adds time pressures to create a tantalising challenge. A responsive virtual stick ensures there are no surprises to Fluid's controls while you guide your creature around the levels. Where the complexity lies, however, is in the exactness of these controls, with the tiniest movement of your finger changing your avatar’s cou…

Warhammer Quest has had its price smashed

Warhammer Quest has had its price smashed

Rodeo Games’s interpretation of Games Workshop’s table-top board game Warhammer Quest has juat had its price dropped on the App Store. This strategic turn-based strategy game is a fantastic interpretation of the old board game. Drawing on a cast that spans from archers to wizards, you must build a squad of suitably stereotypical fantasy fighters to take on quests. With dozens of dungeons and other subterranean areas to journey through you will have to master all of the game’s tactics, magic, and big swords if you hope to emerge victorious against the forces of chaos. Careful construction of your team is vital. Archers prove invaluable at range, but placing one in front…

Space exploration roguelike Star Command gets a stellar price cut

Sci-fi roguelike Star Command has just been given a price cut of galactic proportions on the App Store. Warballoon makes no secret of its Star Trek inspiration for this explorative space adventure. You take command of a starship filled with red, blue, and yellow shirt wearing crew, which you must then guide through the cosmos in search of new life and civilisations.   Never certain whether the next species you encounter will be friend or foe you must always be at the ready. Upgrading your ship and its crew will ensure you are prepared for everything the universe could throw at you. This only works if you fortify the right part of your ship, however, as powerful cannons…

E3 2014: Hands-on with Mech, the online arena-based robo-battler

Chillingo announced its team-based eight-on-eight robotic deathmatch game Mech earlier this week. Just a few short days later we got our hands on the game itself, courtesy of the Chillingo booth at E3. Mech draws heavily on the ethos of huge robot simulation series Mech-Warrior, so fans of these PC classics should feel quite at home with the new title. This is still a very early build of the game, with a lot of kinks still being hammered out by developer Small Impact Games. With a lot of polish still being added, nothing is final, but Peter does get a chance to find out how controlling a large robot will work on a touch screen, and how the team hopes to implement its free-to-play mod…

Angry Birds Epic Review

Angry Birds Epic Review

At this point the Angry Birds are more than just feathery projectiles in a physics puzzler. They have become icons that can leap into any medium they choose. Like Mario before them, their first step was into the world of kart racing, and now they have progressed to a strategy RPG with the turn-based Angry Birds Epic. To keep things easy for genre first-timers, Epic does away with exploration of similar titles. Instead it adopts a map that will be familiar to free-to-play fans, with fi…

Gameloft lifts the lid on upcoming endless-runner Spider-Man Unlimited

With the Amazing Spider-Man 2 game still fresh in our minds, Gameloft’s announcement of its new endless-runner Spider-Man Unlimited came as a bit of a shock. While 'runner' is certainly the easiest shorthand for this new Spidey game, a more accurate description of the action would be endless-swinging-crawling-punch-and-runner. Spider-Man Unlimited lets you take control of one of twenty different versions of Spider-Man. But, whether you are playing in the traditional red and blue suit, or The Boombastic Bag-Man, your goal of chasing down the hero’s iconic villains above the Manhattan skyline will remain the same. Featuring three different modes, Unlimited Mode, Story Mode, an…

E3 2014: Hands-on with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite iOS on iPad

We've been interested in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite iOS since it first landed on the Japanese App Store. A spruced-up port of the 2009 PSP game, it features tweaked visuals, and a completely overhauled control system designed exclusively for iOS. However, as our Japanese is a little rusty, we were delighted when Capcom revealed that the creature-battling epic was on its way to the North American App Store.  Naturally, the moment we arrived at E3, we immediately sprinted over the Capcom booth to get our hands on the English version. Here's some direct-from-iPad footage of Peter fighting a massive red dragon. And mostly losing. …

VVVVVV Review

Originally released back in 2010, Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV has been a long time coming to iOS. A lot of this time has been spent making sure the touch controls live up to original's button-based system. It's a huge consideration for this precision platformer as any issues would ruin the experience. So, it is with some excitement that we can say that Cavanagh has pulled it off. The story begins with your character Capt. Viridian telling his crew to abandon ship as the vessel is sucked i…

E3 2014: Hands-on with Hitman: Sniper on iPad

While Hitman Go was a critical success for Square Enix - we thought it was a fantastic and original interpretation of the Hitman series -  there were some franchise fans who felt that it was lacking in the gunplay department. If you were one of these people, then fear not: Hitman: Sniper should scratch that itchy trigger finger of yours. Due to be released on iPad later this year, this tactical gallery shooter is all about being one with your sniper rifle. You have to assess your targets and their surroundings, planning several shots ahead to ensure you make your mark, and the alarm isn't sounded by a startled bodyguard or keen-eyed maid. We sent our own mercenary-for-hire Peter…

Top 5 World Cup games on iPhone and iPad

It's here, and there's no escape. Whether you bleed football, or prefer to watch others bleed football until all the football has dripped from their stitched leather veins, the World Cup has begun. It's started. Deal.  If you love the beautiful game, the time has come to wrap a scarf around your shins, shove a vuvuzela up your nose, and shout at a bunch of blokes chasing a ball till one of them - entirely unprovoked - kicks it at his mate. However, if you like footy - or soccer, if you must - but prefer letting your fingers do the dribbling, then we strongly recommend you check our Top 5 World Cup games on iPhone and iPad.…
