Apple tells new games with 'Flappy' in their titles to flap off

It has been an odd few weeks on the App Store. First, after reaching critical mass – and making a lot of money - Flappy Birds was removed from the App Store by creator Doug Nguyen. Now it seems that Apple is rejecting games with word 'flappy' in their title. The company's strict new line over the use of 'flappy' came to light over the weekend, when Mind Juice Media's Ken Carpenter tweeted about the rejection of his new creation, Flappy Dragon, from the App Store. Apple directed the developer to the App Store review guidelines. Specifically, the App Store custodian highlighted guideline number 22.2, which states "Apps that contain false, fraudulent or misleading representations will b…

Spectrum-era adventure Doomdark's Revenge is now available on the App Store

Classic '80s text adventure Doomdark's Revenge has just been released on the App Store. Originally developed by Mike Singleton and released in 1985, Doomdark's Revenge was the follow up to his earlier game The Lords of Midnight. Continuing the original game's story, Doomdark's Revenge casts you in the role of Luxor the Moonprince. After destroying the Witchking in the first game, Luxor must now do battle with his daughter, Shareth the Heartstealer, in order to rescue his bewitched son. With five races to recruit, each lead by their own lord, you must build allegiances and friendships to grow your army before marching on Shareth's forces. This is easier said than done, as many lords can on…

R-TYPE II Review

These days, the notion of guiding a spaceship from left to right in the hope of stopping an alien invasion is rather quaint. In the days of R-Type, however, this flavour of sci-fi blaster was still considered cutting-edge. Irem's side-scrolling shooter series introduced massive power-ups and screen-filling bosses to a generation of gamers. As a result, seeing these games faithfully reproduced in the palm of our hands creates a strange nostalgia. As far as content and visuals are…

Cartoon Network transports Card Wars - Adventure Time from the Land of Ooo to the App Store

Card Wars is a card game that was created for Cartoon Network's cult-TV show Adventure Time. Now, you can play that game yourself on your iPhone and iPad From the very beginning you will be faced with tactical decisions. Every character has their own unique ability that affect the course of matches. Your character, combined with your choice of deck, will dramatically change your tactical options.. Once into the action, you must lay down four lanes. These will dictate which card can be played in each path. Some of your cards are only playable in swamps, while others can only be placed in cornfields. You also have to manage magic (a resource that limits actions per turn), which al…

Classic characters unite in the debut trailer for Tales of Asteria

Namco Bandai has revealed that Tales of Asteria, the latest adventure in the long-running Tales RPG series, will be coming to iOS in Japan this spring. Following hot on the heels of the US release of Tales of Phantasia, the new game will unite six characters pulled from other episodes in the saga. Among the six will be Milla Maxwell from Tales of Xillia, and Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia. According to a report in Gematsu, the plot will revolve around "fragments of a star that makes wishes come true." Though the character roster may feature familiar faces, Tales of Asteria's combat will play out via the new "cross slide battle" system. The game will also feature voice acting, a…

Dungelot 2 creator admits 'fail' after pulling the game from the App Store

The developer behind Dungelot 2 has pulled the game from the App Store only two days after its release due to bugs and poor feedback from players. Speaking out on his Facebook page and Twitter account, Dungelot creator Dmitry Mitrofanov wrote: "I've removed Dungelot 2 from sale at the moment. We admit fail and will relaunch with new update." According to Pocket Tactics, Mitrofanov conceded that that game has "tons of bugs," and that "ratings were very bad" Indeed, at the time of its removal, Dungelot 2 had earned a less than dazzling two and a half star rating on the App Store. While many customers complained about the game's new and aggressive free-to-play monetisation system, others…

Massive sci-fi adventure Out There warping onto the App Store this month

Ambitious space-based exploration sim Out There is due to warp onto the App Store later this month. The aim of this "dark and melancholic" adventure to build a ship capable of intergalactic travel, and then roam in the universe is search of resources, confrontations, and civilisations composed entirely of sentient, bipedal acorns. Probably not that last one. According the preview conducted by sister site Pocket Gamer, there's plenty to get excited about. There's a hefty plot, a ridiculously large expanse of space in which to boldly go, and the promise of diplomatic misunderstandings with alien species. Check out the trailer below and see what you think. If you like what you see, keep you…

Check out the nightmarish teaser for upcoming survival horror Knock-Knock

If, like me, you adore survival horror games, you've probably has your eye on Knock-Knock for some time. Well, prepare to have that eye filled with flickering lightbulbs, filthy walls, and other creepy imagery, courtesy of the game's brand new trailer. If you're unfamiliar with Knock-Knock, it follows the exploits of an insomniac wandering around his house being harrased by malevolent spirits. Partially funded via Kickstarter, the game popped up on our rader because of its fantastic art and animation. Some of the beasties look pretty unsettling, too. Plus, as it seems you only have a candle for protection, there's a chance we might actually feel under theat when trying to escape t…

Pyro Jump Review

Pyro Jump Review

It's hard not to be instantly attracted to Pyro Jump's premise. The story of a small flame that has fallen in love with an origami princess is an unusual romantic tale, one that can only end in tragedy. But, while Pinpin Team's pinpoint-platformer is endearing, it struggles to live up to its promise. You control all of Pyro Jump's action with a single tap. Touching the screen launches the little flame into the air, propelling him outwards from his current position. Holding the screen…

Review EA Chillingo By Alex Beech, 10 years, 1 month ago
Bloodstroke Review

Doves, blood, and excessive violenge - director John Woo's fingerprints are all over Bloodstroke. But, while at first glance this new game from Chillingo seems to be relying on the famous director's name and a distinct visual style, it actually adds a lot of interesting twists of its own to the top-down shooter formula. Perhaps the most striking thing about Bloodstroke is its handsome watercolour visuals. This powerful art style uses strong black brush strokes on a white bac…

Dungelot 2 | Hands-On

The original Dungelot was a bit of a cult hit last year, and now the series is back with a new look and even more dungeons filled with casual rogue-like action. Having delved a little into the murky depths of the original game, I'm returning to the darkness to shine some light on this new outing. What's been changed? What's stayed the same? And what was Konami doing with the hearts in Castlevania? All will be revealed on my hands-on adventure, so click the play button on the video below to join me on my quest.…
