Tumbledrop Review

Tumbledrop by Starfruit Games is a beguiling and challenging physics puzzler with a cutesy style that borders on excessive. The magic of this App comes from not only attempting to solve puzzles normally, but also how it rewards repeat players. Each level involves solving an intricate puzzle by getting the "pink star" to land on the available safe zone(s). However the challenge comes from attempting to do so while the star starts in a precariously balanced position. Tapping blocks will…

Apple Announces iPad

Apple Announces iPad Today Apple announced one of their most highly anticipated devices, the iPad. Kind of like a giant iPhone (say 300% scale), the iPad features familiar controls such as the central home button, volume and power on/off, plus it runs off the new iPhone 3.2 OS, not yet to be released on the phone. The touch pads keyboard is a standard QWERTY, for easy laptop typing, no more sore thumbs. There is even word of flash support. There will be an App Store launched for the iPad, beginning with 140,000 pre existing iPhone apps which have compatibility. Apple has also announced an SDK to get the ball rolling on further app development. The device comes with the usual lineup of apps…

TileStorm Review

Lets be honest, sometimes it's not hard to understand why people shy away from games that call themselves "puzzles", because ultimately few people enjoy the idea of being frustrated working out solutions. TileStorm by Massive Hadron walks a thin line between fun and frustration with its tile-sliding puzzles that you'll either love or loathe. Manipulating puzzles couldn't be easier and play much like a regular tile-sliding puzzle. The trick here is to maneuver the pieces to form a path…

Heavy Mach 2 Review

Heavy Mach 2 by IndiApps is a surprising title, if only because it's a sequel that dares to try a radically new approach to its gameplay. Instead of bouncing your way through a side-scrolling 2D world, your "Mach" is viewed from a top-down view and plays like a tactical action RPG which brings the series closer to serious mech-battles than ever before. Gameplay is controlled using a radically unique single-finger touch system. Touching enemies locks your Mach on to them and fires auto…

geoSpark - WARNING: Highly Addictive! Review

From the culminated efforts of two fantastic developers, GeoSpark is a highly addictive pick-up-and-play game where players must shoot their way to survival by destroying all the geometrical “sparks” whilst trying to achieve the highest score possible. The game can be approached in two ways. You can either take the easier and subsequently longer approach and tap and destroy each of the sparks for 10 points, or if you're feeling more adventurous you can tap on a spark and d…

Commodore 64 Review

For many people, the Commodore 64 (C64) is remembered with equal part nostalgia and frustration. It found its primary market in the UK, but even despite the video game crash of 1983 it still had a home in North America. If you're one of the few people lucky enough to have experienced the superior gameplay the system had at the time Commodore 64 by Manomio might just be for you. Much like Manomio's port of Flashback, this app is a licensed emulator of the C64. The menu system is easy t…

Cross Fingers Review

Cross Fingers by Mobigames is about as polished as a puzzle game can get on the iPhone with a slick presentation and stunningly simple gameplay that will eat up all of your spare time. The challenge of Cross Fingers is a basic one with players invited to shift blocks of varying size and shape to fill the voids on the screen. Much like tangram puzzles, these voids can be comprised of extremely odd shapes and will require some logic to piece together the final composition. However, this…

Skies of Glory Review

There's a kind of magic that comes from developers that use the free-to-download but pay-to-play model correctly and Skies of Glory by SGN will have you handing out cash almost willingly. As the name implies it's a flight simulator with arcade style dog-fighting. The game's set in World War II and takes players on a world-wide tour as you progress through the missions. Your accelerometer controls the basic tilt and lift of your plane, while touches and drags allow you to manipulate yo…

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X Review

There's a danger in porting games from the current generation of consoles to hand-held devices simply because they tend to never capture what made the game so special in the first place. Tom Clancy's HAWX has been brought to the App Store by Gameloft and shatters any doubts about providing an authentic experience on your iPhone. HAWX is a dog-fighting flight simulator that errs more towards arcade gameplay than it does realism. The game's set in a semi-fictional modern technological w…

It's hard to put some prejudices behind and while racing games are generally fun, they also lack a lot of energy and feel like they're entirely interchangeable. mondrian Review

Anybody familiar with the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian and his Neo-Plasticism artform may have an inkling to what this game is about. What is doubtful is that they expected to have the ghost of the man himself accompany the player on a quest to retrieve his paintings from all over the world. Mondrian is a block puzzler where the player must move coloured blocks around the level in order to recreate some of the paintings by Mondrian. Even though you are doing the dead man a favour, he is…
