Summoners War opens applications for its 2026 World Championship

If you had told me as a child that one day you could earn a lot of money by being good at a game, I would have found a way to play more. Last week, Yu-Gi-Oh! started on the Road to Worlds, and today, applications for the Summoners War World Championship have opened.

This tournament is open to the general public to apply to enter until June 29th, with a bit of a caveat. Applicants will be chosen based on performance during the World Arena Season 36 and Season 37, meaning you have to have already been playing a lot. 

Whilst that will work against a probably large group of people who want to try their hand at a tournament, it is understandable. Novices will probably get wiped out anyway by those who have had at least two seasons of PvP practice. It eliminates the underdog, but will make for a better spectacle.

Multiple stages for maximum fun

And speaking of spectacles, every match will be broadcast live on the Summoners War esports YouTube channel. So let’s take a look at the matches. There will be Regional Prelinaries in August across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Winners will head to the Regional Cups in Hamburg, Toronto, and Bangkok from September to October, and then onto the SWC2026 grand stage.

12 players will duke it out in the finals. Three from each Regional Cup, two from a separate China Qualifier, and then one from the Korena Open Qualifier, by virtue of being the host. There will be a grand total of $216,000 in prize money split between the Regional Cup, China Qualifier, and Worlds Final, with a massive $100,000 for 1st place. 

In terms of gameplay, there is an interesting rule this year: the Stack Ban. Competitors can ban one Monster before a match, starting with the second match in a best-of-series. The monster is then banned from all matches in the series, forcing players to innovate. Hopefully, that will bring out the best entertainment for viewers.
