Sword Art Online: Variant Showdown is shutting down, but they are doing it right
I enjoy anime a lot, and one of my favourite series is Sword Art Online. Yes, the harem angle is cringy, but I love the FullDive immersion idea. I especially love the video game spin-offs, which is why I was very sad to learn that Sword Art Online: Variant Showdown is facing the axe this month.
Having launched back in 2022, Variant Showdown was an action RPG, much like nearly every other Sword Art Game. You pulled for characters, put together a team of three, and then beat up monsters in little arenas. It was alright, but I would rather be playing Sword Art Online: Integral Factor.
The close date will be October 30th, and I have to knock Bandai Namco for that announcement. They used the “it would be difficult to continue providing a satisfying player experience” line.
Just admit it didn’t make those gacha bucks. This aside, it won’t be ending with a whimper.

There will be a finale campaign to wrap things up in a neat bow, which will arrive this month along with the final episodes of Part 4. Variant Showdown had its own original story, so it's nice that fans will hopefully get a satisfying conclusion. After that, however, it will be game over. Or is it??
Bandai has vindicated my lifelong love of them once more, because they are doing their shutdowns right. Unlike some companies, Square. In November, there will be an Offline Edition released, much like Animal Crossing Pocket Camp did recently. Please be aware that the deadline to migrate your data will be January 26th, 2026.
If you are wondering what this version will hold, then wonder no more! You will have access to all quests released after the long maintenance that ended last year, as well as a selection of floors from the Unlimited Dungeon. Takedown Battles and Battle Royals can be done against the CPU, but obviously not with other players. The Character Interactions can be enjoyed, and you can experience the Main Story, Side Stories, and Extra Stories.
In short, Sword Art Online: Variant Showdown may be dying, but it will live on. You can still sneak it off the App Store and Google Play if you wish to enjoy the final hurrah.
