Our pick of the top iPhone and iPad game of the week - Block Droppin' Blitz

Sometimes a puzzle game comes along that knocks you for six. Other times a puzzle game comes along and slides onto your homescreen and, almost without you noticing, becomes the kind of game you go back to over and over again. Block Droppin' Blitz definitely fits into the latter category.

It's a game that's sort of two games. Your screen is split in half - at the top you've got coloured blocks, at the bottom you've got a clear space. Match a group of four blocks of the same colour and they'll drop down to the bottom part of the screen. You need to make horizontal lines, like in Tetris, to clear them from the lower portion.

It's a really clever idea, and while it is another match-stuff puzzler, there's actually a lot more going on here. The mixture of concepts means you're always juggling a couple of things, and when the levels get tougher, that juggling becomes ever more frantic and fun.

Back with another of those...

You'll start to learn little tricks as you play, like piling the white blocks in just the right way to clear the whole screen in one fell swoop. The levels get tougher and shorter as you work your way through them, which means putting your new skills into action is the key to success here.

The polish here has definitely gone into the play, so don't let the slightly drab visuals put you off. This is one of the best puzzlers that we've played on the App Store for a good long while. And that's saying something, since our jobs involve playing pretty much all the games on the App Store.

Where other so-called puzzle games are all about funneling you towards IAP, this one is actually about the play. It's going to make you think, it's going to make you smile, and it's going to stick around on your homescreen for an awfully long time.

If that's piqued your interest in the game, you can click this link right here to head over and grab it right this second from the App Store. And we definitely think that you should.
