In a piece of news that will surprise absolutely no one who has ever seen the beautiful and cinematic quality of Genshin Impact and Honkai character trailers and the like, miHoYo has announced that they have received government backing to develop films based on their world-famous franchises.

The original article was posted on the Shanghai CPC Branch’s Official WeChat Account and states that the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee is bankrolling miHoYos’ foray into animated films. Watching the latest Honkai Star Rail trailers for Sparkle and Acheron, or even as far back as Klee's in Genshin, it doesn’t seem like the giant needs much help, but whose to turn that down?

This support comes as part of the Publicity Department's three-year action plan for the Shanghai City of Film project, which aims to turn the city into a powerhouse for artistic expression. The branch is also conducting field research and is in conversation with other major film, games, and special effects companies located in Shanghai.

After heading to miHoYo’s motion capture laboratory and diving deep into the technologies used in the production, such as real-time motion capture, digitization and 3D digital character model animation production, it’s clear to see the branch was hooked. A symposium was held with Hoyoverse introducing the goals and tasks of the project, and history was made.

As part of this agreement, the Film Department has announced they will be helping miHoYo better participate in making Shanghai the film creation benchmark for the world, by supporting the development of animated films for two of their original IPs; Genshin Impact and Honkai. There was no clear indication if by Honkai they mean Star Rail, Impact 3rd, or both, but either way, it sounds like an exciting development.
