As relaxing and enjoyable as games in the clicker genre can be, it's arguably somewhat rare to find one that has the ability to tell a genuinely engaging and affecting tale. The recently released Alter Ego is an all-too-rare example of a clicker with something special to offer.
It mixes basic clicker gameplay with extensive personality tests and a story that shifts and concludes differently depending on your decisions. In order to take a test, you first need to collect EGO by tapping on stray thoughts and feelings, known here as "whispers".
Its clicker gameplay is fairly straightforward and accessible. That said, the moment to moment action remains engaging thanks to the excellent score and simple, polished visual style.
Despite having released only recently, the game has earned plenty of rave reviews from players. The power of its narrative and enthralling personality test sequences have been especially well received.
While you could call it short but sweet, the various endings make repeat runs genuinely interesting and worthwhile. It'll appeal most to those with a keen interest in philosophy and psychology, though pretty much anyone can enjoy its story and wonderful presentation.
