Ubisoft Halifax, the studio working on a Rainbow Six Mobile, has just been shut down by Ubisoft.

Seventy-one employees were laid off in early January 7th as Ubisoft decided to shut down Halifax completely. Ubisoft claimed it was due to a company-wide mission of becoming more streamlined and reducing operation costs.

However, gamers are not convinced its that cut-and-dry. Just a few days ago, 61 of the 71 Ubisoft Halifax employees joined the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada, Local 30111. Now, many believe that Ubisoft shut down the studio due to employees' attempts to unionize. The timing is a bit too sus...

Firing employees because they joined a union is illegal, according to CWA Canada. The media union has stated that it's going to look into Ubisoft's shut down of Halifax and asking the company questions.

“In Canada, it’s unlawful for a business to close because its workers decide to unionize,” CWA President Carmel Smyth said. “We will be looking for Ubisoft to show us that this had nothing to do with the employees joining a union."

Are we still getting Rainbow Six Mobile?

The shutdown of Ubisoft Halifax is not just a bummer for the gaming industry and the impacted employees, but for fans of Rainbow Six Siege.

Rainbow Six Mobile was very close to its global launch in February 2026. This follows years of testing and various production phases, creating a lot of anticipation for competitive mobile gamers.

Esports teams have already been announced for Rainbow Six Mobile, which the R6 Mobile X account has replied to. This gives us a bit of hope that Rainbow Six Mobile will still be launched and supported as planned.

It's currently unclear what the future of Rainbow Six Mobile will be. Will another team at Ubisoft take over? Will the project be dropped? It's still too early to know, but it's definitely a concerning update for the mobile shooter.
