There have been a couple mining games of late in the app store. I Dig it is the latest. Controlling a vehicle with jets and a giant drill, the goal is to find as much ore, gems and precious items as possible to pay off the debt on your farm. As you drill deeper, the rewards become greater, but you have to manage not only your vehicle's fuel, but your heat, cargo and damage as well.
The game controls via an analogue stick at the bottom of the screen. To drill a section of earth, just tap the stick in that direction. To move, hold the stick in that direction. Pressing up on the stick engages the jets, causing your vehicle to fly. Back at the farmhouse, you can buy upgrades to every part of your vehicle, plus dynamite and extra fuel carriers. This becomes crucial the lower you go.
The visuals consist of 3d sprites, and while functional are a little bland. More contrast would have been helpful. The sound effects are not noteworthy but do their job. The game comes not only with the campaign mode, but free play and challenges as well. There are also achievements to unlock as you're playing.
I Dig it has a lot to its gameplay. The balance between upgrading your vehicle and earning money adds a lot of depth to this mining game. It does take a while to get the hang of though, and its open-ended nature might frustrate some people. Those who enjoy exploring, and upgrading in their games should give it a try.
