PROS

  • The soundtrack is pretty cool.
  • All the adverts are so blurry that it doesn't feel so embarrassing to see them all over.

CONS

  • Find a corner; shoot from the corner; get health; find a corner...

VERDICT

The Expendables Game manages to boil down survival shooters to the absolute core and you know what? It's not pretty.

The magic of a film like The Expendables is, at least for me, something that comes from the sheer over-the-top insanity of having so many big names duking it out for screen time while being shameless in its pandering to the action genre in general. Sadly The Expendables Game by Nurogames features next to none of this energy and excitement and this, above anything else, is a real shame to see.

By default your character will simply run around the deserted 3D environment and can be turned by tilting your device left and right. Stopping and shooting are also handled by two buttons on the left and right side of the screen. And that's just about it; wave after wave of simple AI enemies will wander in and await their doom while Barney (who is incapable of walking backwards or strafing) takes them out one at a time.

Despite taking control of Sylvester Stallone's character from the movie (Barney) you'll be more acquainted with the back of his head as you're locked in to an over-the-shoulder view point. The 3D visuals are decent and the area you fight in is relatively large, but a global lighting scheme gives the game no depth and coupled with its washed out textures it looks more like an unfinished test stage than an interesting combat arena.

If you don't mind standing in a corner and killing just about everything that moves, then The Expendables Game might be for you, but even at its introductory price there are more interesting ways to spend your time than on this lazy shooter.
