Yeehaw! I don't know about you, but the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 is still fresh as a daisy in my mind and I explored a fair few miles of mountains and wild country at the weekend (digitally). Who doesn't love drinking, gambling, and riding around in the blistering heat on horseback, eh?
It got me thinking though – what about cowboy games on mobile? Western-themed titles aren't an outlier by any mark, but which ones are definitely worth playing? Sadly, there's no Red Dead official 'blah's on iOS just yet, besides the companion app, but these should give you the same gun slinging, rooting tooting vibes.
Westy West Cowboys – download on iOS
It's bite-sized, a bit daft, and all over adorable… Well, if you excuse blowing people's heads off for a bit. Wherever you're hopping along to, you'll be saving civilians from the Black Hat gang in action-filled shootouts. Crossing the west won't be easy, of course. There are wild horses, snakes, nasty traps, and more waiting for you in the wild.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath – download on iOS
This hybrid between 3D platform and third-person shooter may not look particularly western, but the lands of Western Mudos are full outlaws and rather unwelcoming inhabitants. Explore various areas, hunt for bounties, choose a situation's best strategy, and customise the game with the controls you prefer.
2-bit Cowboy – download on iOS
Play as a teeny tiny sheriff and clean up the riffraff in your town. Take on challenges, earn handsome rewards for your trouble, and collect cosmetic goods to jazz up your cowboy/cowgirl however you like. There's plenty to do and lots to love in this plucky little game.
The Oregon Trail: American Settler – download on iOS
It's not just shootouts and gambling, a big part of the era was finding a place to settle in the west. In it, you need to build up your frontier town, hunt, fish, farm, and visit neighbouring villages to collect hearts. You also need to watch out for all of the dangers on the road though, travelling across country won't be without its perils after all.
Space Marshalls 2 – download on iOS
Unlike how you'd expect most western/space ranger shooters to go, the game isn't about spraying your bullets out like pennies. No, playing as Burton, you've got to use stealth and the correct tactics to take on your enemies as well as picking the right gear and weapons for the fight. Okay, so it's not technically set in the west, but I won't tell anyone if you don't.
