P1 Select is a hard-as-nails roguelike from acclaimed developer Michael Brough

Michael Brough, the cult developer behind roguelike hits Imbroglio, Cinco Paus, and 868-Hack, has very quietly released his latest game, another roguelike (or “Broughlike”) called P1 Select.

This one plays out across 9 randomly generated levels, and there are 9 different characters to pick from, including Bounch, Midas, Phaser, Doom, Dashe, Pop/Up, Vish, Fast!, and X-ray. Each character has their own unique ability, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experiment.

For those who might not have played any of Brough’s previous stuff, his games are usually referred to ask “Broughlikes”, a term that’s come to describe any roguelike based on an especially small grid. You can expect fierce monsters aplenty, special power-boosting magical rings to seek out, and collectable pyramids to uncover. It’s visually very similar to Brough’s earlier games, with Cinco Paus’ sketch-like doodles and hand-drawn style.

Pocket Gamer, our sister site, has covered a lot of Brough’s games in the past, often praising them for their inventive nature, smart design, and distinctive look. I’d recommend checking out the site’s review of Brough’s 2013 hit 868-Hack to get a better idea of what his games are all about.

I remember really enjoying his earlier stuff, though I’m yet to try Cinco Paus, his last game, which I hear is playable only in Portuguese. P1 Select is now available for download over on the App Store. It’s a premium app, priced at £2.99, so you won’t need to deal with any IAPs or ads.
