PROS

  • Clever merging of two franchises to create something fresh and fun.
  • Tonnes of content with a focus on problem solving instead of brute-force effort.

CONS

  • Not far enough removed from previous titles to bring on board those who dislike or have fallen out of favor with the franchise.

VERDICT

Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space may be great on their own, but combine the two and you get Angry Birds Star Wars, a great tie-in that learns from the mistakes of the past to make something wonderful.

I rarely say this, but every now and then a developer actually 'gets it'. 'Gets what' you say? They get tie-in products, which is all the more strange for Angry Birds Star Wars not only being a mash-up of two very popular franchises, but the game isn't even new - it's an add on. Yet still, here I sit playing the game, gaze firmly fixed on my targets as I attempt to solve yet another tricky puzzle.Over the years this sort of puzzle design is what Angry Birds has come to specialize in and nearly perfect. While the basic birds you should already know and maybe even love are here, they've all got a brand new spin to compliment the Star Wars theme and add brand new challenges in to the mix. From the Luke Skywalker-esque red bird with his block-destroying light saber, to the black bird's force-push, and even yellow bird is in on the action as a laser-pistol-wielding Han Solo. Although these abilities remain much the same as their original incarnations, the stages are tweaked to exploit their subtle secondary effects.Force pushing objects will cause some to float and not simply fly around, giving them greater hang-time and causing wide-spread destruction; Light sabers give the red-bird a deep-penetrating effect that can cause critical failure on the toughest of structures; and the laser-pistol will ricochet off metallic surfaces, allowing for complex shots that can bring down a fortress in seconds.Of course there are more than just this three, with Chewie, Leia, and C-3PO also joining in on the fun whether it's in the swamps of Dagobah; floating in space around the Death Star; or chilling out in the deserts of Tatooine.Angry Birds Star Wars combines all the best elements of the franchise to date, making it a definite must-have for fans of physics-flingers and the Angry Birds titles.
