Hard-as-nails indie hit Hyper Light Drifter arrives on iOS this week

Hyper Light Drifter, the Zelda-inspired indie classic from developer Heart Machine, is set to hit the App Store this Thursday, July 25th. It’s a neon-drenched action RPG that sees you travelling across a crumbling yet elegant world of rock-hard bosses and oddball NPCs. The game originally launched for PC back in 2016 after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign where $645,158 was pledged to bring it to life. It was an instant hit among critics and fans, earning almost universal praise for its intense combat, stunning visuals, and score from It Follows and Fez composer, Disasterpeace. Its narrative is wordless and open to multiple interpretations, something that a few players foun…

Plants vs Zombies 3 enters pre-alpha phase on Android

Seemingly out of nowhere, EA has announced a pre-alpha for the third entry in its popular tower defence series, Plants vs Zombies 3. The alpha test is open to a very limited number of Android players, and it’s currently unclear whether they’ve already got all the testers they need. The original news of the alpha test came from Android Police. From what I can see, there’s been very little info released about Plants vs Zombies 3 prior to the sudden announcement of an alpha test. I’ve tried to sign up myself, but the game’s Google Play page appears to be temporarily offline. There’s also no word on which regions the alpha test is open to – it’s a…

Biggest update yet for Pirates Outlaws adds new pirates and an arena mode

Pirates Outlaws, the popular roguelike card game from developer Fabled Game, has now received its biggest update yet, adding new pirates and an extensive, intense arena mode. The update is available now for all players on Android and iOS. The arena mode gathers together every relic, card, and enemy from the main game for a complete, exceedingly challenging experience. It’s a stage-based mode where you’ll occasionally take on boss-type enemies. There’s no AP to manage or map to rely on, so you’ll instead be given a variety of pre-selected actions at the start of every battle. The arena comes with its own new rewards, so you won’t just be collecting the exact…

Pokemon Go and One Piece are teaming up for a neat crossover event

Niantic's smash-hit AR title Pokemon Go is teaming up with beloved, long-running manga/anime series One Piece for a special crossover event at the end of the month. It’ll run from July 22nd through to July 29th, and it’ll give you the chance to nab an exclusive Straw Hat Pikachu. This slightly bizarre pairing comes just in time for Pokemon Go’s third anniversary and One Piece’s 22nd anniversary. If you’re yet to read/watch anything One Piece-related, it started life all the way back in 1997 as part of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The pirate-starring series has since gone from strength to strength, with several decent video game adaptations and the af…

P1 Select is a hard-as-nails roguelike from acclaimed developer Michael Brough

Michael Brough, the cult developer behind roguelike hits Imbroglio, Cinco Paus, and 868-Hack, has very quietly released his latest game, another roguelike (or “Broughlike”) called P1 Select. This one plays out across 9 randomly generated levels, and there are 9 different characters to pick from, including Bounch, Midas, Phaser, Doom, Dashe, Pop/Up, Vish, Fast!, and X-ray. Each character has their own unique ability, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experiment. For those who might not have played any of Brough’s previous stuff, his games are usually referred to ask “Broughlikes”, a term that’s come to describe any roguelike based on an es…

inbento is a delightful food-based puzzler from the team behind Golf Peaks

inbento is an upcoming puzzler from the team behind Golf Peaks that sees you learning how to put together increasingly elaborate bento boxes. It draws plenty of inspiration from striking Japanese aesthetics and, of course, bento cuisine itself. The game requires you to master some tricky cookery mechanics. You’ll gradually grow more skilled at putting together each meal and eventually even learn to develop your own hand-crafted recipes. It also tells a heartwarming tale about a family of cats, exploring the theme of parenthood in simple and wordless, though still impactful, ways. You can expect a tight and concise puzzle game with around 2+ hours of memorable and fun gameplay. This…

Lamentum serves up a terrifying world of Lovecraftian horrors

Lamentum, from developer Obscure Games, is an upcoming horror game that takes you on a terrifying trip through mid-19th century New England. You play as Victor, an inquisitive aristocrat who takes it upon himself to discover a cure for a mysterious, unexplained disease. He’s heard talk of a reclusive earl with the power to grant wishes. The only problem is that the old coot is holed up in the Grau Hill mansion, a monster-filled hellhole of a place. Cue a grisly trip into the darkest depths of human nature, one with Lovecraftian horrors and oddball characters to spare. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve, including Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, and of course H.P…

Stranger Things 3: The Game is a brilliant, old-school adventure

The newly released Stranger Things 3: The Game serves up an old-school adventure where you play through the events of the third season of Netflix's hit sci-fi show Stranger Things. It’s fairly reminiscent of something like Zombies Ate My Neighbours, with its straightforward combat and appealing, pixelated visuals. This one’s perfect for fans of the show looking to take a deeper dive into the latest series, but it should still appeal to those who can’t tell a Demogorgan from a Mind Flayer. Pocket Gamer, our sister site, reviewed BonusXP’s adaption of the first season of Stranger Things, Stranger Things: The Game, back in 2015, praising its pixel art visuals and abi…

Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall lets you collect and play as your favourite GOT characters

Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall is the latest mobile-bound game based on HBO’s wildly successful fantasy series. It seems to be a strategy RPG of sorts, with a large focus on collecting the show’s most iconic characters. It comes to us from GAEA Mobile, the publisher behind the likes of Ace of Arenas and Heroes of Camelot. On the development side of things is Behaviour Interactive. Of all the many Game of Thrones games we’ve seen over the years – including Game of Thrones: Conquest, Reigns: Game of Thrones, and Telltale's story-based Game of Thrones series – this one looks like one of the most promising. You’re tasked with commanding a Night’s W…

The long-awaited space-based strategy game Tharsis is now available on the App Store

After an exceedingly long wait, the iPad version of turn-based strategy game Tharsis is finally set for launch on the App Store. This one originally released all the way back in 2015 for PS4 and PC, and it was met with a fairly warm reception thanks to its layered dice-based decision making and high level of challenge. The idea is that you’re in charge of humanity’s first trip to Mars. Surprising precisely no one, the trip takes a turn for the worse, and soon you and your crew are racing against the clock to keep everyone alive. Big news! Tharsis is coming to iPad on 6/27 (AKA this Thursday)! This has been a long time coming and we thank you all for being so patient! https://…

K-Pop sensation BTS releases BTS WORLD, a boyband management game for iOS and Android

BTS WORLD, a story-based game that lets you become the manager of K-Pop boyband BTS, is now available for download over on the App Store and Google Play. As someone who has almost no knowledge of the band’s music or history, I don't exactly fall into the target demographic for BTS WORLD; but, admittedly, the trailer featured in an article over on Metro has actually impressed me a fair bit. You can receive text messages from the boys, take video calls, help them with their very busy schedules, and even manage their social media. The various decisions you make throughout your management career will seemingly have an impact on the way the narrative plays out. And, on top of all that,…

Wholesome dating sim Dream Daddy comes to mobile tomorrow

Game Grumps’ wholesome dad dating sim, Dream Daddy, is finally headed to iOS and Android tomorrow, June 25th, with a Switch version set to launch on July 2nd. The game’s development started all the way back in 2016, after members of the popular YouTube channel Game Grumps were inspired by the success of Hatoful Boyfriend to make their own dating sim.  It’s a visual novel that sees you playing as a single dad. Most of your time will be spent sifting through text, spending time with your daughter, and going on dates with the game’s many goofball dads – all of who come with their own mini-games and multiple potential endings to their story. There are 7 dad…

Unbroken Soul serves up a gauntlet of action-platforming brilliance

Upcoming platformer Unbroken Soul is one of 2019’s most promising mobile games. It comes to us from developer Chorrus Games, the minds behind The Quest Arena and Colour War. At first glance, it’s hard to kick the feeling that there’s perhaps something a little off about its pixelated visuals, though the gameplay shown in the trailer below appears fast, fluid, and tricky – just what we like to see from our hyper-challenging platformers. We also get a quick glimpse at some of the bosses, including a flame-spewing knight, a stone golem, and a giant slug. It seems like the whip will be an integral part of getting around the game’s various spike-filled hellscapes…
