Elysian Shadows promises to be a next-gen 2D RPG

If you're itching for something like the RPGs of 16-bit yore, only with a modern sheen, then by jove you're in luck. Elysian Shadows is an upcoming Kickstarter-backed isometric 2D Action RPG that's managed to nab well over half its required funding in just 10 days. Yes, we have the odd retro-inspired RPG plop on to the App Store every fortnight or so, but this team is aiming to "push the envelope" by fusing 16-bit charm with modern techniques. In Elysian Shadows, you'll be able to lob anything in your inventory at baddies, bask in 3D lighting for 2D sprites, and witness the spectacle of particle physics that I have no idea how to explain. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the ga…

For those of you unaware of the Kickstarter success that is Subset Games's FTL: Faster Than Light, it's a rougelike that casts you as a starship captain being pursued through space. Warping haphazardly from point to point, you can never be certain whether you are about encounter friendly aliens who will offer to repair your beaten ship, or a barrage as meteors that will destroy what remains of your shields. You have to manage your resources, prioritising what perks to construct and which items to repair at each stage of your journ…

Multiplayer turn-based strategy game UFHO2 lands on iPad

UFHO2, a geometric turn-based multiplayer strategy game, was originally launched on PC after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Now, after more than two years, developer Tiny Colossus has finally bought the game to iPad. The mazes are made up of seven interlocking hexagonal areas, each with seven further hexagonal rooms inside them. With both areas and rooms able be rotated during your turn, you will find yourself opening and closing off multiple paths a…

Darkest Dungeon reaches Kickstarter goal with 30 days to spare

With 30 days still to go, turn-based strategy game Darkest Dungeon from Red Hook Studios has already reached its Kickstarter goal of $75,000. Currently the turn-based dungeon crawler is destined for PC and Mac. The studio's stretch goals reflect this hardware choice, with additional characters, cinematics, and Steam mod integration all promised if the fund breaks the $500,000 barrier. What is particularly interesting about Darkest Dungeon is its approach dungeon crawling. While the goal will still be to hack your way past the forces of chaos to defeat a timeless evil, you will not be finding shiny weapons and armour to improve your four-person squad. Instead, you will be managing the team'…
