Alter Ego is a surprisingly emotional and affecting clicker for iOS and Android

As relaxing and enjoyable as games in the clicker genre can be, it's arguably somewhat rare to find one that has the ability to tell a genuinely engaging and affecting tale. The recently released Alter Ego is an all-too-rare example of a clicker with something special to offer. It mixes basic clicker gameplay with extensive personality tests and a story that shifts and concludes differently depending on your decisions. In order to take a test, you first need to collect EGO by tapping on stray thoughts and feelings, known here as "whispers". Its clicker gameplay is fairly straightforward and accessible. That said, the moment to moment action remains engaging thanks to the excellent score…

Lego Builder's Journey is a surprisingly beautiful and poetic puzzler

Apple Arcade has seen another surprising release this week. Lego Builder's Journey is the latest title to hit the tech behemoth's $4.99-a-month subscription service, and it looks really quite good. From what I've seen, Builder's Journey couldn't be more different than Lego Brawls, which launched onto the service earlier this year. It's "a story about play, connection, and adventure", which sees you crafting elaborate pathways using a mix of creative solutions and handy instructions. Meet @LEGO_Group’s newest adventure: LEGO Builder’s JourneyIn this poetic puzzler, you will build to reach new levels and experiment with breaking rules while enjoying beautiful music.Play it now…

Garena Free Fire's Winterlands event comes bearing tons of new content

Garena Free Fire continues to be one of the biggest and most successful mobile games around. Now, a new event is on its way to help players get into the festive spirit. Winterlands, as it's known, will start by bringing back some of the most popular content from the last year of Free Fire, including skins such as the gingerbread man and polar bear suit, as well as game modes like Cold Steel, Clash Squad, Explosive Jump, and Big Head. Everything I've just listed will only be available for a limited time, so you'll need to be quick. On top of the older content, we'll also see a new holiday theme, new characters, and a new pet. The upcoming Snowman mode will be available to play from Decemb…

Cat Quest II adds a challenging New Game+ mode and a host of great improvements

Cat Quest II has now received a free update that adds an extensive New Game+ mode and makes a number of minor improvements that nevertheless should add some extra polish to the experience. New Game+ is obviously the big new addition here. It basically allows you to restart the game on a higher difficulty mode with all of your old gear, skills, and XP from your original run. Interestingly, you'll be able to increase the difficulty to suit your preference, kicking enemies all the way up to level 999 if you so desire. Another major change comes in the form of improved partner AI when playing solo. For completionists, detailed completion stats for dungeons, items, and quests are now viewable…

Overdrive II, the fast-paced hack 'n' slash, is now available for iOS

Gem Mobile's Overdrive II is a fast-paced, futuristic hack 'n' slash set 100 years after the apocalypse. With its neat sci-fi aesthetic and blistering action, it found plenty of fans when it first launched for Android. Earlier this week, the game finally made its way over to the App Store, allowing iOS players to get involved. While Overdrive II's world might be a post-apocalyptic, its inhabitants are feeling better and stronger than ever. That said, following a rogue AI taking charge of all robots and cyborgs, humans have had quite the struggle on their hands. Thankfully, a legion of ninja warriors has risen to the challenge, pushing back against the robot menace with their incredible comb…

Little White Rocket flies onto Google Play after launching for iOS last month

Little White Rocket first launched for iOS back in November, and now it's made its way over to Google Play. It's said to be an atmospheric and minimalist experience which sees you controlling a little white rocket as it travels the galaxy. Controls here are simple thanks to the one-touch approach to spinning, aiming, and flying. It's not looking to be super challenging; instead, you should expect a more meditative and relaxing time, where a calming sense of adventure meets easy-going puzzles. One of the big draws here is the addition of narrated poems that play out as you explore. These were written by award-winning poet, Laurence O'Dwyer. Developer Macalaus has previous experience worki…

Marvel Contest of Champions adds Fantastic 4's Silver Surfer

Marvel Contest of Champions adds Fantastic 4's Silver Surfer

Marvel Contest of Champions now boasts one of the largest rosters of Marvel heroes and villains in any game to date. The latest character set to join the collectable brawler is the Silver Surfer. Developer Kabam recently put out an extended cinematic trailer to celebrate the game's 5th anniversary. Turns out the game has done really rather well over this last year, which also happens to have been the year of the Fantastic 4. And so I suppose it was only a matter of time before one of the 4's greatest villains showed up. Silver Surfer's lack of patience will be justified. pic.twitter.com/mlpSGFoJiZ — MarvelChampions (@MarvelChampions) December 12, 2019 In order to save his home…

Marvel Contest of Champions celebrates its 5th anniversary in style with a cinematic trailer that hints at the game's future

Marvel Contest of Champions is celebrating its 5th anniversary in style with a neat cinematic trailer that hints at the future of the game's world and extensive roster of Marvel characters. Contest of Champions launched all the way back in 2014, and since then it's gone from strength to strength. It's now totalled over 2.8 billion hours of play time from over 215 million summoners, with a whopping 70 billion completed fights in total. What's especially impressive is that around 0.8 billion hours of that play time and 31 billion completed fights come from this last year alone. 25 new champions have been added in 2019, bringing the game's total up to an impressive 160 characters. Metacritic's top 50 games of the decade is disappointingly light on mobile games

Metacritic's top 50 games of the decade is disappointingly light on mobile games

Metacritic, everyone's favourite film, games, and music aggregator, has now released its top 50 highest-rated games of the decade. Truth be told, there are very few surprises here, though what stands out to me is the complete lack of mobile games. Sure, Journey (number 40) and Inside (number 28) eventually got ported over, but there's not a single entry here that originated from iOS or Android.  Even indie darlings like Monument Valley (Metascore of 89), Florence (Metascore of 82), and The Room (Metascore of 89) don't come particularly close to hitting the 91+ Metascore required to feature here. The thing is that there are mobile games from the past decade with a score that's more than…

Dragon Raja, the epic fantasy MMORPG, is now open for pre-registration

Dragon Raja is an ambitious MMORPG which presents the player with a sprawling open world to explore. While it may be set in what looks like a distant future, the story revolves around ancient dragons who once ruled the earth. After a lengthy slumber, they are slowly returning to reclaim their territory, and so, rushed for time and underpowered, a select group of humans merge with dragons to use their immense strength against them. The news today is that the game has now opened for pre-registration for iOS and Android. Visually, it's all really rather impressive, easily rivalling the best-looking MMOs on mobile. It's also said to offer a ton of varied content, from basketball mini-games t…

Cut the Rope creators release cute idle game Om Nom: Merge for iOS and Android

By now, I reckon just about everyone and their gran has played a bit of ZeptoLab's Cut the Rope. The cute physics-based puzzler, originally released all the way back in 2010, starred a little green creature called Om Nom, who also happens to be the star of the studio's latest game, Om Nom: Merge. Unlike Cut the Rope, this one's a fairly straightforward idle game. It sees you working to merge together different types of creatures known as "Nommies". These guys have a real sweet tooth, and they love nothing more than to eat through endless amounts of tasty fruit. Merging them will create faster, more efficient Nommies, allowing you to earn more rewards even when the app is shut. Every Nommie…

Console-quality Dynasty Warriors mobile game opens for pre-registration

Exciting news today for Dynasty Warriors fans, as a console-quality spinoff for mobile has now opened for pre-registration in China. This isn't the first time the popular series has made its way to iOS and Android, though the quality of the earlier titles has admittedly been rather mixed. Attention was first brought to the game's trailer by Industry Analyst, Daniel Ahmad. According to Ahmad, this latest spinoff will feature a traditional Musou combo system, light RPG mechanics, and the large-scale battles that the series is known for. A new Dynasty Warriors mobile game is in development for the China market, developed by Koei Tecmo's mobile studio. The game aims to replicate console qual…

Eye of Prophecy is an intense dungeon crawler for Android with a great retro aesthetic

Stroopwafel Game Studios' Eye of Prophecy is an intense action-adventure title with a striking aesthetic and no shortage of grisly creatures to fell. It's set in a once-idyllic world now ravaged by Galosh, the God of Chaos. You take on the role of a tribesman, Themba, who sets out to save his people and navigate the Eternal Labyrinth to put an end to Galosh's reign of terror. On his quest, he'll take on an army of foul monsters while he gradually hones his skills in combat and learns to overcome what initially may seem like an insurmountable challenge. Dotted throughout the Labyrinth are coins which can be collected to upgrade Themba's speed, strength, and resistance. At its core, Eye of…

Bulbware's gross-out dungeon crawler Poopdie launches December 12th for iOS and Android

Bulbware's long-in-development dungeon crawler Poopdie is set to launch onto the App Store and Google Play on December 12th. The game takes plenty of cues from the likes of The Binding of Isaac, though its poo and fart-obsessed story and sense of humour seem to be targeting a slightly younger audience. It sees you playing as a young worm called Poopdie. He lives in a world where everyone now finds it impossible to defecate or let out so much as a small fart. Naturally, this results in many folks being slightly grumps and often aggressive. Now fed up with being picked on for his stunning ability to fart, Poopdie heads out to discover the truth behind this widespread affliction and ultimat…

Intense FPS Red Dot soft-launches for Android on Google Play

Intense FPS Red Dot soft-launches for Android on Google Play

Developer OnFace's Red Dot looks like a fairly standard FPS, with a collection of familiar modes from other games in the genre. There's your usual no-thrills Team Death Match, but Red Dot also offers a single-player sniper mode, which reminds me of something like Hitman: Sniper. Maps here range from cities to shipyards to warehouses. Again, very typical military FPS fare. At launch, there are over 50 weapons to collect, which seems like an awful lot. There are assault rifles, snipers, SMGs, heavy MGs, shotguns, pistols, and knives in the mix. You'll be able to customise your arsenal with upgrades and unlockable skins. There are also 5 characters to select from, all boasting their own uni…
