Hidden Gem of the Week: Hexa Turn

Hidden Gem of the Week: Hexa Turn

Hexa Turn is a minimalist logic puzzler, placing your barrier-construction abiltiies againsit a predictable AI and tricky level configurations. As a concept, Hexa Turn is quite simple: a triangle relentlessly travels the hexagon grid turn-by-turn, taking the shortest possible route towards squares on the grid. It's your job to prevent that by filling in hexagons to create barriers, blocking off the triangle's path and redirecting its approach, until you've trapped it with no viable moves forward. That's easier said than done when once Hexa Turn starts adding multiple squares to protect and larger grids for the triangle to move across. Even without the mechanics that come later, Hexa Turn…

Squirgle turns arithmetic into a hectic and hypnotic fast-paced puzzle game

Squirgle turns arithmetic into a hectic and hypnotic fast-paced puzzle game

When you think of a math puzzler, you're probably thinking of game revolving around adding, substracting, multiplying, or maybe constructing geometric shaoes. Squirgle's approach is both familiar and abstract: combining arithemtic with a kaleidoscopic aesthetic, number bases, color matching, and a ticking clock. Squirgle looks complex at the first glance - and it does have a number of mechanics to manage - but it's simpler to imagine the shapes along the bottoms of its screen instead as numbers. A point equals 1, a line has two points and so equals 2, a triangle has three points and equals 3, and so on until looping back to the point, depending on the number base you're playing with. Your…

Unorthodox multiplayer game One Hour One Life is headed to iOS and Android

In some ways, One Hour One Life is familiar. It has all the hallmarks of the popular survival genre: crafting, gathering resources, building shelters, other players running rampant. But that title describes its most unique attribute and secret to its generational pacing. "One Hour One Life" says it quite plainly: you have one life and it lasts an hour. You start as a defenseless baby and die at a ripe old 60, sixty minutes later with each passing minute equaling one year of life from infant to child and so on. As an infant, you must trust and rely on older players to protect you, while as you grow older, you must choose to protect and care for new baby players. Each passing generation exp…

Make Squares offers a clever twist on classic Tetris, available on iOS and Android

You know how to play Tetris: tetromino pieces falling from above, fitting them together to make rows, and so on. Make Squares takes those familiar pieces and delivers a unique variant that turns your understanding of the pieces and their relationship on its head. As you've probably guessed from the title, Make Squares tasks you with combining pieces into squares, and manipulating your growing central structure to catch falling tetrominoes. Most importantly, instead of rotating pieces, you rotate the larger structure, forcing you to consider orientation and how future pieces will dovetail with different sides. This change turns the familiar feeling of Tetris into a new spatial ch…

World of Demons' gameplay trailer showcases stylish swordplay and painted monsters

Platinum Games revealed World of Demons last month, but this new trailer gives us a better idea of its touch-based gameplay and showes off its vibrant aesthetic more clearly. Perhaps most interestingly was the glimpse of the larger marco game of collecting minions in your "deck", to enhance and unleash in battle. Each minion brings their own style to combat; once you're on the open battlefields, players must wield magic attacks like rings of flame and slicing wind alongside special attacks that can hit multiple foes or strike for fierce damage.  Fourteen minutes video of gameplay with developmer commentary is also available online (courtesy of IGN), providing a longer look at the ev…

Golfing receives a quirky alternative in upcoming arcade sports game What The Golf

Golfing seems relative simple game-wise, Whether it's a realistic course or full of mini-golf obstacles, you're still hitting a ball with a club to a hole. But What The Golf laughs at the notion, instead promising a much weirder and wackier take on the sport when it releases on mobile later this year. Technically, you're still dragging on the screen to aim and set the power of your launch towards a waiting goal, but What The Golf's similarities to actual golf end there. Across its various courses, you'll need to lauch everything from a house to a pile of clubs, from a horse to an egg through physics-based gauntlets; some stages won't even be typical courses but instead have you flicking a…

Hidden Gem of the Week: Swapperoo

From Fallen Tree Games, developer of the Quell games, Swapperoo evolves the traditional match-3 formula in interesting ways to deliver a surprisingly strategic puzzler. At its most basic concept, Swapperoo follows the same design principle of connecting three or more items on a grid, removing those matched items from the grid, but that is where the similarities end. Most importantly, you can only move specific triangular tiles on the grid, and can only move these triangular tiles in the direction they're pointing. This design choice makes each match a strategic affair, forcing the player to plan several moves ahead. Across handcrafted challenges, randomized stages, and an endless mode, t…

The slingshot mechanic has been a staple for mobile games for years, with myriad games finding different and clever ways to use the touch-friendly control scheme. Guide a trio of critters through forest puzzles in Woodways, available on iOS and Android

A duck, fox, and buffalo meet in the forest...that isn't the start of a joke but the concept of new puzzler Woodways, currently offering cutesy yet challenging spatial brainteasers on iOS and Android. Mechanically, Woodways will feel familiar if you've played games like Quell, Yankai's Peak, and other Sokoban-inspired games; here, you manuever an animal trio with swipes, all three moving in sync in an attempt to reach waiting exit tiles. That alone would allow for cleverly-designed challenges as you navigate past teleporting wormholes, slippery ice patches, and boulder barriers, but Woodways adds another mechanic into the mix: each animal has a unique attribute that affects where and how…

Devolver Digital's colorful new puzzler Umiro releases on iOS and Android

New Devolver-published puzzler Umiro was once called Recolor, and you can see why from screenshots and footage. Not only is it a game of vibrantly colorful isometric stages, its dual character gameplay pits your heroes against roaming colorless orbs in a quest to bring back color to the world. Each stage of Umiro places you control of Huey and Satura, challenging you to draw paths for both toward red and blue crystals through gauntlets of gates, switches, and black spheres. Once you press play, both characters will follow their paths automatically, so figuring out the order of their movements, when they need to pause for a moment or activates switches at the right time, is key to sol…
